    • A gas generating system (10) including a baffle system (42) for modifying the temperature and pressure of a gas generated by the system, and to remove particulates from the gas. The gas generating system includes a first combustion chamber (34a), a second combustion chamber (36a), and the baffle system (42) adjacent both the first and second combustion chambers so as to enable fluid communication with the combustion chambers upon activation of the gas generating system. In another aspect of the present invention, a baffle system (42) is provided including a first end plate (44) having an opening (44b) formed therein for enabling fluid communication with a first fluid source (34a), a second end plate (46) having an opening (46b) formed therein for enabling fluid communication with a second fluid source (36a), and a sequence of baffle elements (48) extending between the first and second end plates. A first baffle element (48a) of the sequence of baffle elements defines a chamber (60) for receiving therein a fluid through the openings in the first and second end plates. Each additional baffle element in the sequence of baffle elements is spaced outwardly apart from a preceding baffle element in the sequence of baffle elements. In another aspect of the invention, a method is provided for producing, in a gas generating system, a gas having a pressure within a predetermined pressure range and a temperature within a predetermined temperature range. In another aspect of the present invention, a vehicle occupant protection system is provided.

    • A gas generator (10) includes an igniter (27) and first and second inflation gas generant compositions (52, 52') positioned to enable fluid communication with the igniter (27) upon activation of the igniter. Flow regulators (54, 54') are provided to regulate a flow of combustion products from the igniter (27) to the first and second inflation gas generant compositions (52, 52'), to correspondingly regulate a time period between activation of the igniter (27) and initiation of combustion of the fist and second inflation gas generant compositions (52, 52'). In another aspect, the gas generator (10) includes a modular baffle system (70) including a first baffle chamber (71) in fluid communication with an inflation gas generant combustion chamber (50) for receiving therein combustion products from combustion of an inflation gas generant (52) positioned in the combustion chamber. An outer baffle chamber (74) is also positioned radially outwardly from the first baffle chamber (71) for receiving therein combustion products from the first baffle chamber. In yet another aspect, the gas generator includes a first enclosure (12), a second enclosure (24), and a projection (44) formed on one of the first enclosure and the second enclosure. An aperture (46) is formed in the other one of the first enclosure (12) and the second enclosure (24) for receiving the projection (44) therein. At least a portion of the projection (44) is fixed within the aperture (46) to prevent withdrawal of the projection (44) from the aperture (46), thereby securing together the first enclosure (12) and the second enclosure (24).

    • An inflator (10) for a vehicle occupant restraint system (180) is provided. The inflator (10) includes a cylindrical outer wall (18) having a longitudinal axis and a first opening (20) formed therealong for enabling fluid communication between an interior of the inflator (24) and an exterior of the inflator. A first inflation fluid source (22) is positioned within the outer wall (18). A baffle system (58) is operatively interposed between the first inflation fluid source (22) and the outer wall (18) for conveying inflation fluid between the first inflation fluid source (22) and the outer wall (18), and for cooling the inflation fluid. A second opening (61) enables fluid communication between the first inflation fluid source (22) and the baffle system (58), and a third opening (62) enables fluid communication between the baffle system (58) and the outer wall (18). The first opening (20) is preferably substantially radially aligned with the second opening (61). An expanded metal mesh buffer (68) may be positioned between within the baffle system (58). Opening enabling fluid communication between the baffle system (58) and the exterior of the baffle system, any openings provided within the baffle system (58), and the opening (20) enabling fluid communication between the interior and exterior of the inflator housing (18) are cooperatively positioned to direct the flow of an inflation gas through the baffle system (58) in directions substantially perpendicular to and/or substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis A. In another embodiment, the airbag includes a first panel (513), a second panel (514) adjacent the first panel, and a plurality of substantially straight seams (520) connecting the adjacent panels to define a plurality of inflation fluid flow passages (517) between the seams (520). Use of the seam patterns described herein in side airbag systems allows for improved airbag performance, particularly when used in conjunction with a linear inflator. Inflation of the airbag takes place in a more uniform manner, reducing the risk of localized overpressurization and seam bursting, and improving occupant protection. Moreover, the seam patterns disclosed herein are relatively simple, and their manufacture is relatively easy and inexpensive.

A gas source material (20) is positioned in the housing interior and is enclosed in a pliable, rupturable substantially gas-and-moisture-impermeable container (24). The gas source (20) is a material (for example, hydrogen peroxide) adapted to undergo decomposition to form at least one gaseous decomposition product comprising an inflation gas. A reactant material (22) is also positioned in the interior of the housing (12). The reactant (22) is a material (such as a catalyst) adapted to react with the gas source material to produce decomposition of the gas source material (20). An enclosure (28) is positioned within the housing (12) to form a cavity (30) between an outer wall of the housing (12) and the enclosure (28). The reactant material (22) is positioned in the cavity (30). A plurality of orifices (34) formed along the enclosure (28) enables fluid communication between the interior of the enclosure (28) and the cavity (30). The container (24) is positioned in the enclosure (28). A resilient, expandable bladder (42) is also positioned in the enclosure (28). A propellant (44) is provided within the bladder (42) for generation of combustion gases upon ignition of the propellant (44), to produce expansion of the bladder (42). Upon ignition of the propellant (44), combustion gases expand the bladder (42), forcing a portion of the container (24) into the enclosure orifices (34), thereby stressing and rupturing the portions of the container (24) in the orifices (34) and releasing the hydrogen peroxide (20) to flow through the orifices (34) into the cavity (30), where it reacts with the catalyst (22) to produce inflation gas.
