    • A method of operating a terminal device to perform measurement event evaluation for measurement reporting in respect of a downlink carrier operating in a wireless telecommunications system. The method comprises determining that measurement event evaluation for the downlink carrier should be undertaken beginning at a start time. Measurements of a parameter, such as a reference signal received power, associated with radio channel conditions for frequency resources used by the downlink carrier are obtained during an evaluation period beginning at the start time. The extent to which the downlink carrier is being transmitted during the evaluation period is also established. Whether or not to send a measurement report to network infrastructure equipment is then evaluated by taking account of both the measurements of the parameter during the evaluation period and the extent to which the downlink carrier is being transmitted during the evaluation period. A measurement report is sent by the terminal device to the network infrastructure equipment depending on the outcome of the evaluation.

    • A method of operating a terminal device and a base station in a wireless telecommunications system to communicate with one another using a primary component carrier operating on radio resources within a first frequency band and a secondary component carrier operating on radio resources within a second frequency band. The terminal device makes measurements of radio usage in the second frequency band, e.g. by other devices which are not part of the wireless telecommunications system but which can also use radio resources within the second frequency band. The terminal device transmits an indication of the measurements to the base station, and on the basis if this the base station establishes a configuration setting for the secondary component carrier, for example in terms of frequency resources to use for the secondary component carrier. The configuration setting is associated with a validity period during which the base station communicates data to the terminal device using the primary component carrier and the secondary component carrier operating in accordance with its configuration setting. When the validity period expires, the terminal device again measures and reports on radio usage so the base station can determine an updated configuration setting for the secondary component carrier that takes account of any changes in radio usage during the validity period.

    • A method of operating a first terminal device to transmit data to a second terminal device by performing device-to-device communication is disclosed. The method comprises selecting radio resources, e.g. particular subframes or frequencies, on which to transmit the data to the second terminal device based on a priority status associated with the data, whereby certain radio resource are reserved for use in association with data classified as high priority. There is also disclosed a method of operating the second terminal device to receive data from the first terminal device. The method comprises receiving data from the first terminal device using the selected radio resources; determining if another terminal device is transmitting data on a radio resource which is not selected for transmitting data by the first terminal device and which is reserved for transmitting data classified as having a high priority; and, if so, stopping reception of data from the first terminal device on the selected radio resources and instead seeking to receive further transmissions from the other terminal device. The disclosed methods thus provide a mechanism whereby a terminal device with high priority data to transmit is provided with an opportunity to interrupt on-going communications between the first and second terminal devices.

    • A gamma ray detector is described. The detector comprises a plastic scintillation body for receiving gamma rays and generating photons in response thereto. The scintillation body is in the form of a truncated cone defined by a base surface and an end surface separated along an axis of extent of the scintillation body with a lateral surface extending therebetween. A photodetector is optically coupled to the base surface of the scintillation body so as to detect photons generated by gamma ray interaction events within the scintillation body. A specular reflector is provided adjacent, but separated from, the lateral surface of the scintillation body so as to reflect photons that leave the scintillation body through the lateral surface back into the scintillation body.

    • A wireless telecommunication system comprises base stations for communicating with terminal devices. One or more base stations support a power boost operating mode in which a base station's available transmission power is concentrated in a subset of its available transmission resources to provide enhanced transmission powers as compared to transmission powers on these transmission resources when the base station is not operating in the power boost mode. A base station establishes an extent to which one or more base stations in the wireless telecommunications system support the power boost operating mode conveys an indication of this to a terminal device. The terminal device receives the indication and uses the corresponding information to control its acquisition of a base station of the wireless telecommunication system, for example by taking account of which base stations support power boosting and/or when power boosting is supported during a cell attach procedure.

    • A touch-sensitive position sensor is disclosed. The sensor comprises an array of first electrodes and an array of second electrodes arranged in a pattern to provide a sensing surface, wherein at least some of the first electrodes and the second electrodes are arranged to follow paths which are non-linear within the sensing surface such that there are ends of the first electrodes and ends of the second electrodes which meet a common edge of the sensing surface. A controller is coupled to respective ones of the first electrodes and the second electrodes and arranged to determine a reported position for an object adjacent the sensing surface by measuring changes in an electrical parameter e.g. capacitance or resistance, associated with the first electrodes and the second electrodes which is caused by the presence of the object. The controller is further operable to provide an indication of the reported position in a first coordinate system defined relative to the first electrodes and the second electrodes, the sensor further comprises a processor arranged to receive the indication of reported position from the controller in the first coordinate system and to transform the reported position to an output position in a second coordinate system, wherein the transform is based on the non-linear pattern of electrodes. Thus, a sensor having electrodes which are distorted so as to meet a common edge may be provided for ease of connectability, with the distortion been accounted for through the transform performed by the processor.
