    • A hybrid single-phase variable reluctance motor (31) has a stator (33) having a plurality of inwardly salient teeth (41A-41D) terminating at a central bore (37). The teeth are arranged in generally diametrically opposed pairs of teeth and are generally evenly spaced around the bore. A phase winding (43) is operatively associated with one pair of the stator teeth. The winding, when energized, causes a temporary magnetization of the stator teeth. A rotor (35) is disposed for rotation in the bore and has outwardly salient teeth (45A, 45B) generally diametrically opposed to each other. A permanent magnet (53) is disposed adjacent the bore at the end of one tooth (41D) of a second pair (41C, 41D) of stator teeth. One tooth (41D) of the second pair of stator teeth is offset with respect to a longitudinal axis (A.sub.1) of the second pair of teeth. This offset acts to eliminate a stable detent position in which the rotor could otherwise "park" itself when it stops running. Parking in such a position makes it difficult to restart the motor.

    • A domestic ice-cream maker comprises a refrigerated bowl-shaped container for an ice-cream mass; a rotatable stirring tool associated with such container for scraping off ice-cream freezing at a refrigerated surface of the container; and a single-phase synchronous motor for rotating the stirring tool, such motor having a maximum permissible operating temperature for making the ice-cream. A transmission path including a reduction mechanism extends between the synchronous motor and the stirring tool. Backlash is provided in the reduction mechanism as overload protection for the synchronous motor, the backlash acting in both directions of rotation of the motor and corresponding in each such direction of rotation to at least 10 revolutions of the motor, the motor, upon being blocked in either direction of rotation, reversing its direction of rotation and passing through the range of the backlash without exceeding its maximum permissible operating temperature.

    • A synchronous motor which has a ring-shaped stator with a radially magnetized ring-shaped permanent magnet and an external housing of a material of high permeability to complete the magnetic circuit. At the inner side of this ring-shaped stator lies a rotor having a central core provided at its ends with pole rings of a material of high permeability. The coil of the motor is provided in the center of the stator and mounted between the pole rings. This construction gives rise to a high magnetic flux in the permanent magnet in the region of the poles of the rotor, which in turn, provides a high driving torque; while the rotor is made exclusively of material of high permeability, having a low weight and a low moment of inertia. Such motors, even when constructed to operate at relatively high power, are thus assured of positive starting.
