    • 1499118 Hydrocarbon fermentation and recovery process PETROLCHEMISCHES KOMBINAT SCHWEDT VEB 22 Oct 1975 [23 Oct 1974] 43382/75 Heading C6F The cultivation of a hydrocarbon-utilizing micro-organism in a culture medium containing a hydrocarbon substrate and the separation of the cells produced from the culture medium as a proteinaceous product are carried out in the presence of a surfactant product of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide of average molecular weight of 1750 to 2250, no other surfactant being introduced. The specified surfactant is employed in the fermentation in a concentration of from 0.01 to 0.15 wt. per cent mol in the separation in a concentration of from 0.01 to 0.8 wt. per cent. Unused surfactant may be recycled to the fermentation in the aqueous or oleaginous phases of the separation. Alternatively, the surfactant may be continuously fed to the fermentation at a concentration of from 0.5 to 1.5 wt. per cent without any recycling or other adjustment of the concentration. The fermentation product is heated up to 30-90‹C before effecting the separation. The Examples relate to the cultivation of Candida guilliermondii on a substrate of petroleum distillate and the recovery from the fermentation of the biomass produced.

    • 1470861 Citric acid PFIZER Ltd 7 March 1975 [8 March 1974] 10616/74 Heading C2C [Also in Division C6] In a continuous fermentation with a microorganism in a nutrient medium in which the main substrate has an antifoaming action, but in which no other antifoaming agent is added, the addition of the substrate to the fermentation broth is controlled by monitoring the amount of the foam and adding a sufficient amount of substrate to reduce the amount of foam when the foam exceeds a predetermined level. An example describes the microbiological production of citric acid by cultivation of Candida lipolytica ATCC 20228 on a C 14 -C 17 n-paraffin substrate. It is stated that the medium first begins to foam when the original hydrocarbon substrate therein has been exhausted. Further foaming occurs as each charge of substrate is used up. The requisite apparatus includes a foam probe 12 electrically connected to a control panel 13 which controls a pump or valve 14 in the substrate supply line 16. The amount of substrate added when the means is actuated may be limited by a timing device (not shown). The apparatus is fitted with an air line 3, and heater 6 and cooler 7 controlled by a temperature probe 8. Specification 1,369,295 is referred to.
