    • A piston and cylinder system (10), the cylinder (12) including a closed end (14) and an open end (16). The piston (18) is movable in an axial direction within the cylinder (12) between a fully extended position and a fully retracted position. The piston (18) and cylinder (12) define first and second chambers (20), (22) within the cylinder (12), (20), with the first chamber (20) defined between a cylinder closed end wall (24) at the closed end (14) of the cylinder (12), a cylinder sidewall (26) and the piston (18). The second chamber (22) is defined between a cylinder open end wall (30) at the open end (16) of the cylinder (12), the cylinder side wall (26) and the piston (18). A first fluid supply port (34) is provided for supplying fluid to the first chamber (20) to facilitate movement of the piston (18) towards the fully extended position; and a second supply port (36) is provided for supplying fluid to the second chamber (22) to facilitate movement of the piston (18) towards the fully retracted position. A biasing means (38) is provided at least partially within the cylinder (12) and biases the piston (18) towards the fully extended position.

    • The valve actuator (10) has a movable control element (12) which is typically connected to the valve to be opened/closed and a propulsion device (16) which may be a hydraulically operated piston (16) for moving the movable control element. A resilient element (22) which may be in the form of a spring arrangement has a stroke extending from a first relatively unloaded position to a second relatively loaded position and a transmission mechanism (18) is also provided, where the resilient element is loaded under the action of the propulsion device via the transmission mechanism and is configured to urge the moveable portion of the propulsion device towards the first position via the transmission mechanism when loaded. The transmission mechanism provides a gearing ratio reduction between the moveable portion of the propulsion device and the resilient element.

    • A valve and valve actuator utilizing a disconnected piston design that separates under conditions of excessive actuator internal pressure to prevent overloading and damaging the threaded connection between the valve stem and actuator piston is disclosed. The hydraulically actuated valve actuator comprises a spring housing including a bonnet for coupling the spring housing to a valve. The spring housing includes an upper head and a packing gland that are sealingly attached to the spring housing to form an interior pressure chamber. The interior pressure chamber has a pressure responsive actuator piston disposed therein with a coil spring designed to move the actuator piston form a normally open to a fail closed position. The pressure responsive actuator piston includes a piston and a spring retainer nut that are separable after closing of the valve to prevent ambient pressure acting within the pressure chamber on the pressure responsive actuator piston from overloading the valve stem.
