    • A fuel injector for an internal combustion engine having an elongated body with a fuel inlet end and a fuel discharge end. The injector body includes an outwardly extending plate attached at a position between its ends and this plate includes at least one radially outwardly extending tab so that the cross-sectional shape of the plate is noncircular. A fuel cup receives the fuel inlet end of the fuel injector and includes a radially inwardly extending ledge at a mid position of the cavity. This ledge includes a through bore complementary in shape to the shape of the plate so that, with the fuel injector and plate aligned at a predetermined angular assembly position, the plate passes through the ledge upon insertion of the fuel injector into the cavity. Thereafter, rotation of the fuel injector and attached plate to a locking position positions the tabs above the ledge thus locking the fuel injector to the fuel cup.

    • A fuel injector, a method of mounting a fuel injector, a combination injector and clamping, and a clamp are all provided for ensuring the fuel injector is mounted in a proper rotative position in an injector mounting bore of any one of multiple internal combustion engine platforms requiring different injector mounting positions. The injector includes a first alignment feature having a first geometry corresponding to a first engagement feature of the first engine platform and adapted to be engaged by the first engagement feature to secure the injector to the first engine platform. The fuel injector further includes a second alignment feature having a second geometry different from, and incompatible with, the first geometry and corresponding to a second engagement feature of the second engine platform thereby ensuring the fuel injector is circumferentially oriented in a correct rotative position required by a given engine platform.

    • A fuel injection system includes a fuel injector socket including a first attachment feature and a fuel injector including a second attachment feature that corresponds with the first attachment feature. The first attachment feature engages with the second attachment feature connecting the fuel injector to the fuel injector socket and preventing rotational movement of the fuel injector relative to the fuel injector socket. The corresponding attachment features not only enable simple connection and disconnection of a fuel injector to a fuel injector socket of a fuel rail, but can also be integrated into existing injector to fuel rail assembly processes and are applicable in any fuel injection system. The corresponding attachment features may be used with metal fabricated fuel rail assemblies as well as for fuel rail assemblies where the manifold supply tube and the fuel injector sockets are overmolded with a plastic material.
