    • A system for presetting register and color zone adjusting devices in a multi-color rotary printing machine uses digitally-driven optical scanners axially traversing the plate cylinders under control of at least one numerical computer. Machine-specific characteristics are programmed in non-volatile memory as referenced values. Data processing is not required to be conducted external to the printing machine. The system is compact and requires practically no re-adjustment or entry of desired values from the machine operator. The machine operator, however, may enter coordinates for printing areas on the printing plate in order to speed up the scanning process for determining the initial color zone preset. The scanner multi-functionally scans the printing plate for both register adjustment and for integrating the ratio of printing to non-printing area for each inking zone. The system is easily reprogrammed and the optical scanner is interchangeable with a densitometer in order to provide alternative control functions during printing, such as the regulation of inking and dampening.

    • To match the width of zone adjustment of doctor blade elements or zones of a continuous doctor blade of a printing machine inking system to pick up units of photoelectric transducers scanning patterns, in columnar zones, so that the degree of inking of the ductor roller can be matched to the degree of printing density of the pattern in the respective zones by control of the doctor blade elements or zones, the transducer arrangement includes a plurality of transducer elements of selectively different transducing widths, associated with the zones of information coverage of selectively different widths to match the width of the transducing means to the zones and for transmission of thus matched transduced signals to the printing apparatus and derive an output of utilization signals with respect to the zones of selectively different widths. Transducing elements of respectively different widths may be used (FIG. 3); or much narrower transducing elements, the outputs of which are then combined in a summing circuit and in which the number of the transducing elements, transverse to the transport direction of the pattern, is equal to the common divisor of the zone width (e.g. for zone widths of 30, 35, 40 mm, a transducer width of 5 mm); or transducers of fixed widths can be located on parallel arms of a scissor grid, the relative inclination of which with respect to the transducing direction can be changed, to provide for infinitely variable overlap, and coverage of the width of the pattern, in zones of infinitely variable dimension.

    • To avoid edge effects and local variations of differences in transducers across zones of material to be printed from which print control signals are to be derived, for example to control the localized or zone adjustment positions of a flexible doctor blade with respect to an ink ductor roller in an offset printing machine, a first standard sample providing, for example, white signals, is first scanned, then a standard sample, providing for example totally inked zones, is scanned, and then the actual printing sample. From each of the scannings, signals are derived with respect to print zones, for example columns in a newpaper layout, the signals being compared to form a difference or comparison signal from the first two standards (light and dark) in the respective zones, which difference signal is stored, with respect to the respective zones, in a file memory (11); this difference signal then is compared with processed transduced signals derived from the actual text to be printed, for conversion into output signals for display, storage or control of the printing machines in accordance with the respective ink coverage of the zones which were scanned.

    • There is provided an apparatus for estimating a necessary amount of ink for printing which comprises a reading head for scanning an original print to produce analog signals representing the optical densities of the picture dots of the original print, an A-D converter for converting the analog signal from the reading head into digital signal representing one of 256 optical density levels of the picture dot on the original print, a plurality of level counters for classifying the digital signals from the A-D converter into 256 groups each including the digital signals representing the same optical density level and counting the digital signals for each group, and a system controller for multiplying the number of digital signals in each group and the amount of ink required to print the picture dot at a corresponding optical density level to produce the total amount of ink required to print all the picture dots on the original print.

    • Apparatus for analyzing an image member such as a photographic film bearing an image to be printed and providing information as to the image area. The information may be utilized in determining initial ink key settings for a printing cylinder on which the image is to be printed. The image member is positioned on a support surface and a scanner assembly including a light source and light sensors scans the surface. Light transmission readings are taken from calibration film strips on the support surface and at positions on the support surface corresponding to the locations of the ink key columns of the printing cylinder. The data are calibrated and normalized using the calibration readings. The data are also corrected for the number of layers in the image member. Data from ink key columns which will not be utilized in printing the image analyzed are discarded. A procedure is provided for removing the effect on the data of any non-image material on the image member.
