    • The image printing system is capable of properly defining amount of ink without adjusting ink clearance. The image printing system includes an offset printing machine, in which proper amount of ink is supplied to a plate drum via an ink fountain roller on the basis of image data. A memory stores the image data of an original image and an ink amount table, in which rotational speed data of the ink fountain roller correspond to rate of area of picture in the original image. A control unit calculates the rate of area of picture on the basis of the image data, reads the rotational speed of the ink fountain roller from the ink amount table on the basis of the rate of area of the picture, corrects the rotational speed so as to define proper control data for rotating the ink fountain roller, and sends the proper control data to the offset printing machine so as to control the amount of ink to be supplied to the plate drum.

    • A method and apparatus for obtaining an accurate half-tone dot percent of each color separation where a color designated by a color specimen is to be reproduced by printing of ink of the colors, for example, yellow, magenta, cyan and black. A variety of color charts printed using predetermined combinations of half-tone dot percents are optically measured to obtain color information of the colors printed on the color charts. The obtained color information values together with the corresponding predetermined combinations of half-tone dot percents therefor are then utilized to prepare a conversion table of color information and corresponding half-tone dot percents for reproducing each of the colors printed on the color charts. A color specimen is then optically measured to detect color information of a color to be reproduced. The color information obtained from the color specimen is then successively compared with the color information of the conversion table, and the color information of the conversion table is selected which most closely corresponds to the color information obtained from the color specimen. The combination of half-tone dot percents corresponding to the selected color information from the conversion table is then displayed or otherwise outputted. The outputted combination of half-tone dot percents may then be used to reproduce the color designated by the color specimen. The method and apparatus also provides for interpolation operations if the color information obtained from the specimen does not precisely correspond to the color information in the conversion table. Further, the method and apparatus also provides for generating an expanded conversion table having expanded combinations of half-tone dot percents and corresponding expanded color information, and for performing an interpolation operation if a value of 0% and/or 100% is included in the combination of half-tone dot percents corresponding to the selected color information so as to obtain an interpolated combination of half-tone dot percents corresponding more closely to the color information obtained from the color specimen.

    • An improved apparatus for measuring the printed area of a printing plate upon which a printing image is formed, of the type having a movable scanning head provided with longitudinally arranged light sources and plural photosensors arranged in parallel with the light sources. The improvement is composed of a proving sensor device separate from and movable independently of the scanning head which includes at least one light source and photosensor. The proving sensor device provides calibration data for correcting the measurements made by the scanning head. It does this by measuring the intensity of reflected light from a totally dark printing area and a non-printing area from anywhere on the printing plate, and a totally reflective surface and totally absorptive surface, which are preferably located apart from the printing plate. The improvement further includes control means for electronically processing the measurement data produced by both the scanning head and proving sensor device.

    • A system for presetting register and color zone adjusting devices in a multi-color rotary printing machine uses digitally-driven optical scanners axially traversing the plate cylinders under control of at least one numerical computer. Machine-specific characteristics are programmed in non-volatile memory as referenced values. Data processing is not required to be conducted external to the printing machine. The system is compact and requires practically no re-adjustment or entry of desired values from the machine operator. The machine operator, however, may enter coordinates for printing areas on the printing plate in order to speed up the scanning process for determining the initial color zone preset. The scanner multi-functionally scans the printing plate for both register adjustment and for integrating the ratio of printing to non-printing area for each inking zone. The system is easily reprogrammed and the optical scanner is interchangeable with a densitometer in order to provide alternative control functions during printing, such as the regulation of inking and dampening.
