    • A bearing assembly is at least partly disposed within the hollow stem or handle of a sports racquet. A plurality of curvilinear channels are disposed at different lateral locations in a direction which is at a substantial angle to the longitudinal axis of the racquet. For each channel there are provided a pair of ferrules through which string segments are strung from, and then back to, the string bed. Preferably the ferrules receive ends of tubes through which the string segments are strung. One embodiment receives most of the main strings of the sports racquet, while another embodiment receives all of them. In one embodiment the bearing assembly also forms the end cap of the racquet handle.

    • A composite sports racquet frame is made by placing a first prepreg tube into a first mold plate and a second prepreg tube into a second mold plate. A plurality of pin plates, each having a plurality of pins which are at least substantially parallel to one another, are secured to the mold plate so that, when the mold is closed, the pins extend between the two tubes. The tubes are pressurized to assume the shape of the mold and contact one another, and the mold is heated to allow resin to flow between the tubes as they cure, the pins forming pin holes in the frame. Once cured, the frame is removed from the mold, and the pins are withdrawn. If desired, the ends of the tubes forming the handle section can be kept separate from one another during the molding process, by using a removable mold plate. In this manner, not only do the two tubes become integral with one another, at least in the head portion, but string holes do not need to be drilled after the racquet is molded.

    • A device can be provided in different embodiments for holding different tensions in different length string sections of a sports racquet stringing bed. In one embodiment, a strip of material is applied on the periphery of the head portion of the racquet and is compressed under the string portions extending between pairs of adjacent stringing holes. In another embodiment, the tension holding device is a plurality of cylindrical bands of compressible material which fit about the string portions and within the grommets of the racquet. In both embodiments, the material is compressed by the string portion to generate sufficient frictional force therebetween to prevent slippage of the string portion relative thereto and thereby hold the different length string sections under the predetermined amount of differential tension. Several embodiments of a variable tension applying device can be mounted across the head portion of the sports racquet to provide displaced locations on a beam across which the longitudinal string sections extend so as to divert them into substantially equal lengths of string sections. After substantially the same amount of tension is applied to each of the equal length string sections, the string sections are released from the tension applying device and then the string sections assume their original different lengths across the open region of the head portion of the racquet with each string section having a differential tension which thereby provides a uniform stiffness to the stringing bed made up by the different length string sections.

    • A racket for ball games, in particular tennis, comprises a stringing system in the form of individual strings. The individual strings are each held in the racket frame by means of rivet sleeves, with the rivet heads bearing against the outer edges of the holes in the racket frame. In the event of a string breaking, there is no reaction on the adjoining strings, and only the broken string has to be changed. The individual strings which are provided for the first stringing or for replacement stringing have a fixedly disposed rivet sleeve at one end. In addition there is a loose rivet sleeve which is intended for being pushed on and connected after the string has been inserted into oppositely disposed holes. In addition described is a stringing device of simple design, by means of which individual strings can be easily replaced even by technically unskilled persons.

    • An improved sports racquet is provided having elements placed between the outer edge of the frame and the strings. The elements prevent the strings from touching the outer edge of the frame and rotate in response to a force applied in a direction generally perpendicular to the strings, thereby expanding the sweet spot, providing improved playability of the racquet, and significantly reducing the fibration that is transferred to the player's arm. The elements are preferably spherical in shape and may be comprised of various materials, including acetal, plastic and metal. The elements preferably rest in receptacles in the racquet frame, which may be integral with the frame or separate pieces, such as sleeves or grommets, that are connected to the frame. The receptacles are preferably designed to have a surface with substantially the same curvature as the bottom surface of the elements.
