    • A reflector (42) for use in a microwave excited ultraviolet lamp system (10) having a plasma lamp bulb (20). The reflector (42) includes a pair of longitudinally extending reflector panels (46) that are mounted in opposing, i.e., mirror facing relationship, and in space relationship to the plasma lamp bulb (20). A longitudinally extending intermediate member (52) is mounted in spaced relationship to the pair of reflector panels (46) and to the plasma lamp bulb (20). The reflector panels (46) and the intermediate member (52) form a pair of longitudinally extending slots (64) that are operable to pass air toward the plasma lamp bulb (20) to envelop the bulb (20) effectively entirely about its outer surface. Alternatively, the pair of reflector panels (46e) are connected to longitudinally extending edges (58e) of the intermediate member (52e). The intermediate member (52e) includes multiple apertures (78) formed therethrough that are operable to pass air toward the bulb (20) to envelope the bulb (20) effectively entirely about its outer surface. A method of cooling a plasma lamp bulb (20) in a microwave excited ultravoilet lamp system (10) is also disclosed.

    • A system (10) and method are provided for applying a desired protective finish to a web (14) of printed label stock. The web (14) of printed label stock is moved through a coating station (18), where a layer of hot melt varnish is extruded onto the web (14) of printed label stock. Then, the web (14) of printed label stock is transferred to a working station (20) in an environment which causes the layer of varnish to at least partially solidify to a predetermined state as it reaches the working station (20). At the working station (20), the layer of varnish is worked to a desired finish. Preferably the web is carried through a nip (40) formed by a pair of rolls, including a highly polished chrome roll (42) which contacts the layer of varnish and works the layer of varnish to a glossy finish. After the layer of varnish is worked to a glossy finish, the web is directed through a finishing station (18), where the glossy finish is fixed in the layer of varnish, and the web (14) is conditioned to a state in which it can be processed as a web of finished label stock.

    • A buffer unit (10) is configured to store and transfer adhesive particulate to at least one adhesive melter. The buffer unit (10) includes a buffer bin (12) defining an interior space (IS) configured to hold a bulk supply of adhesive particulate with an agitator plate (20) positioned within the housing (14) at a non-horizontal orientation. A vibration generating mechanism (26) is coupled to the agitator plate (20) so that vibration is transmitted into the adhesive particulate to form a flow of fluidized adhesive particulate which flows toward at least one pump inlet (22). The buffer unit (10) breaks up clumps of coalesced adhesive particulate to avoid clogging the pump inlet (22), while also ensuring that all adhesive particulate in the buffer bin (12) can be removed at the pump inlet (22). Additionally, makeup air used by pumps (24) to generate vacuum at the pump inlet (22) does not need to be drawn through the entire bulk supply of adhesive particulate.

    • A powder coating apparatus capable of applying powder coating material into articles at high production rates while recovering oversprayed powder is provided. The apparatus may include a powder coating applicator that may form part of a circulation loop for powder coating material from a supply, through the applicator, and back to the supply. The powder coating apparatus may rapidly switch between applying powder coating material and circulating the powder coating back to the supply. In one embodiment, the applicator includes an inlet and a diverter having a first operating mode during which powder coating material flows from the inlet to a first coating material outlet for a coating operation, and a second operating mode during which powder coating material flows from the inlet to a second coating material outlet for a non-coating operation. The coating applicator may be reciprocated into and out of a container such as a tube, with powder sprayed by the applicator into the tube as the applicator is lanced into the tube, and with oversprayed powder which does not adhere to the interior of the tube being pulled back through the applicator as the applicator is withdrawn back out of the tube, for example. A densifier, or condensing device, may be used to remove air from the air entrained powder, and increase the powder to air ratio before the powder is sprayed from the applicator into the container.
