    • In one aspect, an intraocular lens (IOL) is discloses that includes an optic having a central portion and a peripheral extension that partially surrounds the central portion. Once implanted in a patient's eye, the IOL's optic forms an image of a field of view with the peripheral extension inhibiting dysphotopsia. While in some embodiments, the peripheral extension provides focusing of light incident thereon, in other embodiments, it can include at least one textured surface for scattering the light or at least one opaque surface for preventing the light from reaching the retina. In other embodiments, the peripheral extension can include one or more translucent surface(s) for diffusing the light passing therethrough to inhibit dysphotopsia.

    • In one aspect, a trifocal ophthalmic lens is disclosed that includes an optic having a surface that comprises at least one trifocal diffractive pattern and at least one bifocal diffractive pattern such that the bifocal pattern provides near and far vision and the trifocal pattern generates near, far, and intermediate vision. For example, the trifocal pattern can provide near, far, and intermediate foci such that the near and far foci are substantially coincident, respectively, with a near and a far focus of the bifocal pattern. In this manner, the trifocal and bifocal patterns collectively provide near, intermediate, and far foci (or focal regions) corresponding, respectively, to the near, intermediate and far vision.

    • A two optic accommodative lens system. The first lens in the system is fixed in the anterior chamber of an eye. The second lens in the system includes a non-circular ring with radial dimensions that are different in at least two meridians and implanted in the posterior chamber of an eye within the capsular bag. The radial dimension of vertical meridian of the lens approximates the natural diameter of the capsular bag. The optic of the second lens is connected to the ring at the vertical meridian by two or more of haptics. The radial dimension of horizontal meridian of the second lens is slightly larger than the natural diameter of the capsular bag.

    • An optical noninvasive pressure sensing assembly capable of accurately indicating relatively minute pressure changes. The present invention generally includes a light source, such as a Light Emitting Diode (LED) or normal room illumination, positioned to reflected light off of a surface of a membrane. The membrane is in contact with the fluid in which the pressure is to be measured so that changes in the pressure in the fluid cause movement of the membrane. A charge coupling device (CCD) camera captures light reflected off of the membrane and the reflected light is analyzed to determine the relative movement of the membrane based on the change in the pattern of the reflected light.
