    • A method in a cellular communication system provides selection of a channel for use in a pending communications operation, the selection reducing the likelihood of co-channel interference. In each co-channel cell, frequencies from the cell's frequency group are ordered in a sequence. A different frequency in each cell is designated as having a highest priority. Successively lower priorities are then assigned, in each cell, to remaining frequencies in sequence. Then, in each cell, selection is made by identifying the available frequency having the highest priority. The method may be modified to provide for even distribution of hardware use by changing the priorities in each cell periodically. The method may also be modified for use in a fully synchronized time division multiple access (TDMA) system by performing the above steps with respect to channels instead of frequencies. The method may further be modified for use in a pseudo-synchronized TDMA system (i.e., one in which the TDMA time slots of one cell are slowly shifting with respect to the time slots of another cell) by selecting, instead of the highest priority channel, one having a lower priority based on a time difference between corresponding time slots in two co-channel cells.

    • A multi-level layered cellular radio architecture serves mobile subscriber stations (21) moving within the system. Best server selection is performed for the mobile stations (21) by assigning within each cell (C1-C10) a preference value to each other one of the cells (C1-C10) with which is associated by proximity of service area. The strength of the radio signal received by the mobile station (21) from the serving cell (C1-C10) as well as the radio channels of associated cells (C1-C10) is measured. A decision as to the best serving cell (C1-C10) for the mobile station (21) is made based upon both the preference value of the associated cells (C1-C10) and the signal strength of their respective radio channels.

    • A method of avoiding undesirable interferences between services in a telecommunications system that includes basic software (51) for a basic service and supplemental software for services supplemental to the basic service. The supplemental software is divided into action software (52) which acts solely on the basic service, and supplemental software (59) which acts on the remaining supplemental software. According to the invention, a supplemental service is represented by action elements. Combinations of action elements form nodes in a mathematical binomial tree. Only those combinations which correspond to interference, i.e. an undesirable behaviour, between supplemental services will form a number of structures, called interference event trees (55). Before a supplemental service can be executed, its action elements are compared with nodes in the interference event trees (55), with the intention of ascertaining whether or not the former coincide with action elements belonging to the nodes in the latter. Only those interference event nodes whose sets of action elements are equivalent with the set of action elements of the supplemental service or a set thereof are selected. An interference event node whose set of action elements is a subset of the action elements of a node that has already been chosen cannot be selected. Interaction software (58) belonging to selected nodes in the interference event trees is added to the basic software (51).
