    • A system and method for efficient delivery of video segments. One embodiment relates to the delivery of short-time duration video segments. The video segments may be delivered as part of a media-rich interactive program guide (IPG) or for some other application. The system and method provides a viewer with access to a video segment starting at its beginning (or any other selectable point within the video segment). Such access may be provided using a server-centric interactive technique. The server-centric technique may involve use of a demand-cast system and method. Demand-cast messaging may occur between a session manager, transport stream generator, and terminal. For example, a video object on a screen may be activated by a viewer using a remote control for a terminal. Activation of the object may cause transmission of a request from the terminal to a session manager for a video segment corresponding to the object. In response to the request, the session manager may initiate a process to accomplish delivery of the video segment from a transport stream generator to the terminal.

    • Techniques for providing a music interface in a media-rich interactive program guide. In one implementation, an interactive music interface page includes one or more (e.g., two) display regions, a channel description region, and (possibly) a header region. The display regions, channel description region, and the header region are respectively configurable to display a listing of a number of music channels, information for a particular music channel, and one or more objects (icons) used to identify the music interface page. Each display region can include a particular (stripped) background and can further be configurable to display a video. In constructing the music interface page, a set top terminal (STT) may retrieve graphics for the page. The background and commonly used icons may be pre-loaded to the STT. In case of icon changes, the pre-loaded icons may be periodically or occasionally sent from a head end to the STT. During construction of the music interface page, the STT may overlay pre-generated (bitmap) the text within the stripes of the background to create the listing of music contents. In addition, icons may be overlayed at specific locations in the page.

    • Techniques for searching a program guide database. In accordance with a method, one or more search criteria (e.g., keywords) are received and a request for a search is then sent, along with the search criteria, to a head end of an information distribution system. In response, one or more search results are received from the head end. In this server-centric system, the program guide database is searched at the head end. The search results can be displayed on one search result IPG page (or more, if necessary) or displayed one at a time on the respective IPG page that includes the search result. Upon receiving an indication that a particular search result has been selected, one or more streams associated with the selected search result can be retrieved and decoded to recover the selected program, which can then be displayed.

    • The present invention provides multi-user interaction for multimedia communication. In one embodiment, a process for multi-user interaction for multimedia communication includes generating a message on a local user machine, the message including object-based media data (i.e., streamed, digital audio data or streamed, digital video data or both), and transmitting the message to a remote user machine, in which the local user machine displays a scene that includes the object-based media data, the scene being shared by the local user machine and the remote user machine. The remote user machine constructs the message using a message handler class. In one embodiment, the multi-user inter-action for multimedia communication is an extension to MPEG-4 Version-1.
