    • Systems of the invention employ peer-to-peer and centralized server networking to enable POTS/PSTN/PBX phone lines to be shared with other users of the system over the Internet. An example application of the invention is to allow a person, having access to an Internet connection, to receive calls and make calls using his/her home or office telephone, or using the phones of other parties that he/she is authorized to access. In preferred embodiments, the invention can exploit availability of an existing voice modem port on the user's home or office computer, and can require only the installation of software on the home or office computer, and on whatever device (laptop, PDA, computer, mobile phones, etc.) is employed by the user in the remote location. Variant realizations of the invention may also provide any combination of features typically available to phone users, including, for example, the following features: authentication, verification, directory services, directory search, access rights, call forwarding, call answering, voice, mail, missed-call information, call screening, and caller identification.

    • A set of instructions executable at an integrated circuit is partitioned into multiple instruction blocks. A first and second instruction block are executed multiple times, including a first execution and a second execution. The first execution of the first instruction block is associated with a first set of executions, and the first execution of the second instruction block is associated with a second set of executions. A first amount of energy consumption representative of a member of the first set of executions is determined, and a second amount of energy consumption representative of a member of the second set of executions is determined. The first amount of energy is assigned to each member of the first set, and the second amount of energy is assigned to each member of the second set, and used to determine a total amount of energy consumption associated with execution of the set of instructions.

    • The present disclosure allows for the downloading of large digital media files in a progressive manner by allowing for a transfer of such digital media to occur over various sessions. A file server is described that receives a request to transmit a file whereupon the file server locates such requested file in its memory. For verification purposes a unique identifier is computed for the requested file such as an MD5 checksum of the digital file. Thereafter an encryption key, K1, is chosen. Using a second key, K2, the first key and the unique identifier are encrypted, and the requested file is encrypted using the first key. Both these encrypted values are then transmitted. Subsequently, for example, after payment is received, an unencrypted form of the first key is also transmitted. The first key can then be used to decrypt the requested file to unlock full functionality of the requested file.
