    • An implantable medical lead configured for improved MRI safety and heating reduction performance is disclosed herein. In one embodiment, the lead includes a tubular body having a proximal end and a distal end with a lead connector near the proximal end. In this embodiment the lead further includes a conductor extending longitudinally within the tubular body and having a proximal end that is electrically coupled to the connector and a distal end electrically coupled to a contact pin. The lead in this embodiment further includes a filter element electrically coupled to a distal end of the contact pin and a flange electrically coupled between a proximal end of the filter element and a proximal portion of an electrode. In this embodiment the flange and the proximal portion of the electrode form at least a first part of a hermetic chamber enclosing the filter element.

    • The lead body of a medical lead comprises a distal end portion carrying at least one electrode for placement in the pericardial sac of a human heart. The distal end portion of the lead body includes a multi-turn section having opposed ends, opposing forces applied to the ends tending to flatten the multi-turn section, the multi-turn section being thereby adapted to be retained within the pericardial sac. The turns of the multi-turn section may become progressively smaller from one end of the section to the other end of the section. The multi-turn section may have, in a relaxed state thereof, a generally conical, helical configuration. The at least one electrode may be carried adjacent to the end of the multi-turn section having the larger turns. Alternatively, the at least one electrode may be carried adjacent to the end of the multi-turn section having the smaller turns.

    • An omnidirectionally steerable obturator facilitates the delivery of the distal tip of an introducer sheath into the coronary sinus of a heart. The steerable obturator comprises an obturator body extending longitudinally along a central axis, the obturator body being configured to be received by the introducer sheath. The obturator body further has a flexible, deflectable distal end section terminating in a rounded distal tip. An actuator, controllable from a proximal end of the obturator body, is operatively associated with the flexible distal end section of the obturator body to cause deflection of the flexible distal end section of the obturator body in at least one selected direction to facilitate passage of the distal end section of the obturator body and the distal tip of the introducer sheath into the coronary sinus of the heart.The obturator body is preferably configured to be received in a close fit within at least the tip of the introducer sheath.     • An implantable endocardial lead intended for use with a cardiac stimulation device includes an elongated lead body of flexible resilient material, for example, silicone rubber or polyurethane, having a longitudinally extending lumen defined by a plurality of longitudinally extending side wall surfaces, adjacent pairs of the side wall surfaces lying in angularly disposed planes and intersecting at an energy absorbing corner ridge. An electrical conductor is located loosely within and extends longitudinally along the lumen between proximal and distal ends. With this construction, forces imposed laterally on the lead body by the conductor engaging the side wall surfaces of the lumen upon bending of the lead body are absorbed without damaging the lead body by reason of engagement of the conductor with a corner ridge causing the corner ridge thereby engaged to recede toward a condition of being coplanar with its subtended pair of side wall surfaces.

A cable conductor is received in one lumen of the multi-lumen tube for electrical connection to the tip electrode and an elongated polymeric tubular liner having a coefficient of friction in the range of 0.01 to 0.20 is received in another lumen of the multi-lumen tube generally aligned with the bore of the distal tip electrode for freely receiving a guidewire through the tubular liner and through the bore of the distal tip electrode. An electrically conductive proximal pin is attached to the multi-lumen tubing distant from the tip electrode and, in one embodiment, the cable conductor and the proximal end of the polymeric tubular liner are attached to the proximal pin. Initially, the guidewire is implanted into the body along a desired trajectory. With the polymeric tubular liner inserted, first the distal tip electrode, then the remainder of the multi-lumen tube, are slid onto the guidewire such that the guidewire slidably advances within the polymeric tubular liner. Thereupon, the multi-lumen tube is advanced along the guidewire until a desired site is achieved and the guidewire is removed from the body and the multi-lumen tube. In another embodiment, the distal tip electrode has no central bore but the elongated polymeric tubular liner is axially aligned with the distal tip electrode for freely receiving a stylet which is attached with the distal tip electrode.
