    • PURPOSE: To produce methane in high efficiency, by contacting a cellulosic material such as rice straw, waste paper, etc. with a specific amount of ozone in the presence of a specific amount of water or an alkaline aqueous solution, and then carrying out the anaerobic fermentation.
      CONSTITUTION: A cellulosic material 1 such as straw, bagasse, corn stover, waste paper, etc. is crushed with a crusher 2, and mixed in a mixer 2 with water or an alkaline aqueous solution of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal compound fed from the tank 4. The alkaline aqueous solution is pref. 0.01W5wt% aqueous solution of caustic soda, and the amount of the water is pref. ≥0.2kg/1kg of the cellulosic material (dry basis). The cellulosic material is transferred from the mixer 3 to the ozone reactor 5, in which it is brought into contact with ozone generated by the ozonizer 6. The amount of ozone reacted with 1kg of the cellulosic material is ≥0.005kg. After the ozone-treatment, the material is sent to the anaerobic fermentor 7 to produce methane gas 10.
