    • PURPOSE:To stick substrates for LCDs is manner as to allow the control of a gap with high accuracy and easy practicable use by successively irradiating an adhesive applied region with the light of an illuminating member under pressurization by rolling of a press roller. CONSTITUTION:The photosetting adhesive 1 applied between the glass substrates 2 and 3 is cured while the adhesive is held pressurized by the press roller 4. There is no longer the possibility that a pressure is generated after the pressurization. The two glass substrates 2, 3 can be adhered by maintaining the prescribed gap if the region coated with the adhesive 1 is pressurized and photoirradiated while the press roller 4 and optical fibers 5, 6 are kept moved. The fluctuation in the gap occurring in the reaction of the photosetting adhesive is averted in this way and since the photoirradiation is executed simultaneously with the pressurization, the gap control with the high accuracy is possible. In addition, the operations are executed by the inexpensive device combining the press roller 4 and the optical fibers 5, 6 and, therefore, the practicable use is easy.

    • PURPOSE:To more strictly control quality and to produce the high-grade element at a good yield by measuring the double refractive phase differences before and after the rubbing treatment of the oriented films formed on substrates and deciding whether the difference between the two measured values is within a permissible level or not. CONSTITUTION:Transparent electrodes are patterned on the glass substrates and the oriented films are applied and formed thereon. The double refractive phase difference of the oriented films is measured as an initial value before the rubbing treatment. The double refractive phase difference of the oriented films subjected to the rubbing treatment is then measured and whether the difference from the initial value is within the permissible level or not is decided. The substrates are sent as non-defective articles to an assembly stage when the difference is within the permissible level. The substrates are subjected as defective articles to the correction of the rubbing treatment if the difference is off the permissible level. The high-grade liquid crystal display element is produced at the good yield by executing the strict quality control in such a manner.
