    • The present invention is directed to a method of detecting colorectal cancer in an individual comprising determining a level of lysophosphatylcholine (LPC) in the individual, wherein a level of LPC in the individual that is lower than the level of LPC in a control is indicative of colorectal cancer in the individual. The LPC can be, for example, LPC 18:2, LPC 18:1, LPC 16:0 or a combination thereof. In a particular embodiment, the sample the sample (e.g., blood, plasma, lymph and tissue) is obtained from the individual. The level of LPC in the individual can be detected using, for example, a liquid chromatography - mass spectrometry (LC-MS) detection method, an ultraviolet (UV) detection method, an enzymatic detection method and combinations thereof.
