    • A suspension device for coupling a floor maintenance appliance to a surface maintenance machine is disclosed. The suspension device (61, 62, 64) includes a carriage member (120) movably supported upon the maintenance machine through a plurality of linkages (61, 62, 64) coupled to the carriage member. Together the plurality of linkages permit the carriage and surface maintenance appliance to follow undulations in the floor surface during operation of the surface maintenance machine. An actuator (80) engages a lost motion (81, 83) device to lift the carriage member away from the ground surface. A variety of different floor surface maintenance appliances may be coupled to surface maintenance vehicles according to aspects of the present invention.

    • An air barrier or skirt apparatus (50) for a surface treating machine having a brush (16) chamber and a rotatable brush substantially disposed within the brush chamber. The air barrier or skirt apparatus (50) is disposed adjacent either end of the rotatable brush (16) and extend from the brush chamber to a surface to be cleaned. The air barrier or skirt apparatus (50) comprises an inner flexible member (52) and an outer flexible member (86). The inner flexible member (52) and the outer flexible member (86) are coupled to each other at predetermined attachment regions (64, 66, 68, 100, 102, 104), with the predetermined attachment regions defining first and second dimensions on the inner (52) and outer (86) flexible members, respectively. The first dimension of the inner flexible member (52) is less than the second dimension of the outer flexible member (86), so that when the inner and outer flexible members (52, 86) are coupled to each other at the predetermined attachment regions (64, 66, 68, 100, 102, 104) the inner flexible member (52) is formed into a non-planar configuration. A method of fabricating such a skirt apparatus (50) is also disclosed.

    • A wiper assembly (90) for surface maintenance vehicles (20) has a non-destructive failure mode when impacting stationary objects, or otherwise becoming subject to instantaneous or rapidly increasing resistance to forward movement, due to an improved mechanical coupling. Portions (66) of each improved mechanical coupling may either become fully disconnected if the stress force reaches a threshold force value or recoils to the original mounting location after absorbing forces that are less that the threshold force value. The threshold value force is designed to avoid damage to the wiper assembly (90), the articulated mounting member (40)(if any), and the maintenance vehicle (20) itself. The improved mechanical coupling utilizes a resilient, deformable member (66) that adds a modicum of additional travel in response to stress forces imparted to a wiper assembly (90). Accordingly, the teaching of the present invention may be applied to previously manufactured surface maintenance equipment and vehicles in the form of retrofitted mechanical couplings, requiring modest engineering and re-installation efforts.
