    • A composite optical material such as a polymer opal is provided having a three dimensional arrangement of core particles distributed in a matrix. The refractive index of the material of the core particles is different to the refractive index of the material of the matrix and the three dimensional arrangement has a periodicity such that, when a surface of the material is illuminated with white light, the composite material exhibits structural colour. The three dimensional periodic arrangement is a reduced symmetry arrangement based on a crystallographic close-packed arrangement but strained therefrom to have reduced symmetry compared to the crystallographic close-packed arrangement. Bragg reflections from planes that would be forbidden in the crystallographic close-packed arrangement are allowed and visible in the reduced symmetry arrangement. This provides a variation in intensity and/or wavelength of structural colour with rotation of the material about an axis perpendicular to the surface when viewed obliquely while the viewing angle remains substantially constant. Also disclosed are methods for the manufacture of such material.

    • A plasma generating apparatus comprises a first, powered electrode and a second electrode structure located in front of the first electrode. An insulating layer is interposed between the first electrode and the second electrode structure. The second electrode structure has a plurality of second electrode portions defining gap portions there between. The width of the gap portions is w. The second electrode portions each have a forward surface and the gap portions each having a forward surface, the height difference between the forward surface of each second electrode portion and the forward surfaces of the adjacent gap portions being h, and wherein h is at most 1 mm and the ratio w/h is at least 1. Thus, the forward surfaces of the second electrode portions and the forward surfaces of the gap portions together provide a smooth topography. The plasma generated by the apparatus (in air or other oxygen-containing gas) forms ozone, which can be used to treat foodstuffs, for example. The smooth topography allows substantially all of the plasma to be generated inside a package whose wall is pressed towards the second electrode structure.

    • A single use medical device is provided as part of a kit, the kit further including an actuator device. The single use medical device includes a lancet piston slidingly and sealingly located in a bore of a lancet housing of the medical device. The lancet piston operates as a positive displacement piston within the bore, allowing dispensing of liquid from the bore and/or aspiration of liquid into the bore by suitable movement of the lancet piston. The lancet piston includes a sharp tip for pricking skin, and so the device has particular applicability for allergen testing and blood or ISF sampling. The single use medical device and the actuator device releasably attach to each other and the actuator device has an actuator member for releasable engagement with the lancet piston at a before-use position of the lancet piston via a clutch mechanism. The clutch mechanism is typically formed as part of the actuator member. The engagement of the actuator member with the lancet piston is assisted by activation means, typically an internal surface of the housing of the single use medical device or a part of the actuator member. The engagement of the actuator member with the lancet piston allows the actuator member to push/pull the lancet piston forwardly/rearwardly along the bore. At positions forward of the before-use position of the lancet piston, the engagement of the actuator member with the lancet piston is interlocked, assisting in the prevention of accidental needlestick injuries.
