    • PURPOSE:To realize ling-life of a lamp, with lumen maintenance factor improved, together with stopping crack of a sealed part, by lighting the lamp in the posture in which one sealed part having an auxiliary electrode at one end of a luminous tube made of glass is positioned above the other sealed part at the other end of it. CONSTITUTION:Main electrodes 2 and 3 are sealed using molybdenum foils 4 and 5 respectively at both ends of a luminous tube 1 made of quartz glass. A lamp 9 is constituted as follows; an auxiliary electrode 6 is sealed using a molybdenum foil 7, being close to the main electrode 3 at the one end of the luminous tube 1, and the auxiliary electrode 6 is connected to a support base via a starting resistor 8 of 20-50kOMEGA so as to have the same potential as the main electrode 2. The lamp 9 is lighted in the posture in which one sealed part with the auxiliary electrode 6 is positioned above the other sealed part. Hence this method makes it possible to decrease direct-current voltage across the auxiliary electrode and the main electrode being close to each other, to remarkably decrease electrolysis of quartz glass at the sealed part on the auxiliary electrode side, and to stop crack of the sealed part.

    • PURPOSE:To provide a discharge lamp lighting apparatus, in which an auxiliary starting electode is disposed adjacently of a main electrode, and the value of a resistance connected between said auxiliry starting electode and double-voltage starting circuit is selected in a proper range so as to effect transfer from auxiliary discharge to main discharge in a stable menner. CONSTITUTION:When terminal 1b of AC power source 1 is held at a positive voltage, capacitor 6 is charged at the polarity shown in the drawing. On the other hand, when terminal 1a of power source 1 is held at a positive voltage, a voltage charged in capacitor 6 and the voltage of power source 1 are impressed in series, so that capacitor 8 is charged to a double voltage. Output voltage of double-voltage starting circuit 5 is impressed between auxiliary electrode 4 and main electrode 3b via auxiliary starting resistance 10 and glow discharge is caused, whereby electrode 3b is heated and glow discharge is developed between main electrodes 3a and 3b. In the above arrangement, value of the auxiliary resistance 10 is 100-2000 ohm.
