    • Internally fragmented shot is stage released from a cartridge so as to yi a double cone-pattern of shot. The cartridge utilizes a two step fragment release design which expels fragments at two separate points on the projectile trajectory. Parasitic initiation of separate delay trains cause expulsion of fragmented shot so that fragment patterns achieved by each group of fragments yield a dense fragment pattern from point of release over a wider angle. Higher cartridge lethality is attained because an initial fragment pattern overlaps and includes a second fragment pattern. Ability of the design to initiate release of fragments at alternate positions in the projectile's trajectory results in an extended range "shot" capability.

    • An expansile protective cap designed to cover the intake and exhaust ports of an air driven power generator used in an electronic fuze. The cap is constructed of rubber or a rubberlike plastic that remains flexible over extreme temperature ranges and extended times of military interest. This expansile protective cap prevents the entrance of foreign matter into the ports and operating cavity of the generator and impeller before the projectile is fired from a gun. The protective cap is manually removable. However, this is not required. The cap has been designed and features have been incorporated therein such that the cap is automatically removed upon firing. The protective cap comprises a number of blind, oblong cavities located around its circumference. These cavities trap escaping propellant gas and force the skirt of the cap to expand outward. This expansion stretches the cap beyond a lip on the midbody of the fuze and blows it up somewhat like a balloon. Propellant gas escaping toward the end of the barrel of the gun upon entrapment by the cap automatically remove it. This entrapment action usually causes the cap to burst. The cap is scored to enhance the bursting action.

The structure includes an outer casing having an inner surface defining a chamber and further includes means for propagating shock waves across the inner surface from a selected one of two detonation points with the chamber.     • Known projectiles with molded fragments are usually produced in the shape of steels or rollers produced with the aid of powder technology or in a flow compression process. The molded fragments are located in a dense packing in the wall of fragmentation bodies without being able to be brought into an orientation which is advantageous for the fragmentation effect. In order to enhance the fragmentation effect, the fragments are arranged with regard to their orientation and mutual spacing within a casting form in a pattern provided in an inner mold form, and subsequently provided with the cast material. Required through the form-fitting support of the fragments through protuberances projecting into the fragments, after the removal of the fragmentation body the recesses formed in the fragments can have incendiary charges pressed therein. Thereby the fragmentation is enhanced by the additional incendiary effect.

    • The cylindrical warhead has an outer, relatively-thin metal skin member andn inner thicker metal casing, the main explosive charge being disposed in the space between the members with associated boosters or charge initiators. The initiators include a first set of circumferentially-spaced aiming detonation members and a second set of similarly spaced main charge-firing members. Aiming is achieved by first firing a selected aiming initiator to produce a force sufficient to rupture and break open an arcuate section of the outer warhead skin but insufficient to produce a main charge detonation. Next, a main charge-firing initiator disposed substantially diametrically opposite the ruptured arcuate section is fired to produce an inwardly-directed main-charge blast for fragmenting the thicker inner casing and driving the fragments in the desired direction through the ruptured arcuate section.

    • The present invention relates to fragment projection-blast devices capablef focusing fragmentation and destructive blast effects. In particular, the invention takes the form of a warhead characterized by interior, multipoint initiation of detonation which increases metal velocity and enhances blast properties, a truncated cone charge and metal liner arrangement which controls metal projection direction and blast propagation, and end plates which partially confine gaseous products and enhance initial blast properties. According to the invention, an explosive composition is shaped by the projectile walls and by metal truncated cone arrangements on the warhead. Detonators located in the interior of the explosive compositon and opposite the apices of the truncated cones ignite simultaneously, causing directed fragmentation.
