    • PURPOSE: To filter raw water from the peripheral side of a filter material layer, by providing a spiral raw water flow passage forming plate and a filtrate collecting part to a filter material layer.
      CONSTITUTION: Raw water is passed through a first raw water supply pipe 6 and a second raw water supply pipe 8 from a raw water supply pipe 7 and flowed into a first raw water chamber 3 and a second raw water chamber 4. Raw water flowed into the first raw water chamber 3 and the second raw water chamber 4 diffuse into a filter material layer 2 from the upper and the lower sides thereof and are filtered by the upper and the lower parts of the filter material layer 2 and directed to a filtrate collecting part 19. In addition, the raw water flowed into the first raw water chamber 3 and the second raw water chamber 4 is flowed into the raw water flow passage 15 of a raw water flow passage forming plate 14 from the upper and the lower end openings thereof and diffuse thereinto so as to be directed to the filtrate collecting part 19 from said raw water flow passage 15 and filtered through the peripheral side of the filter material layer 2. Because the filtration is carried out through the peripheral side of the filter material layer 2 in addition to the filtration through the upper and the lower parts thereof, the increase and the available utilization of the filtration area of the filter material layer 2 are attained and the enhancement in a filtering speed, filtering efficiency and filtering capacity can be attained.

    • A bed of granular media is supported in a vessel to process liquid flowed in through both the upper and lower faces of the bed and out of the bed at a location intermediate the upper and lower faces. A drain structure for the processed liquid is mounted at the location intermediate the two bed faces with the capacity to withdraw the quantity of liquid flowing into both of the bed faces. A closed circuit is provided to transfer residual material in the drain structure back to the inlet system of the bed after backwash of the bed. A holding vessel is connected to the vessel in which the media bed is supported to temporarily receive the media for service periods of the bed vessel.

    • Embodiments of a method and filter apparatus (10) for filtering and/or treating water are shown and described, each embodiment being for multiple-stage processing of water or other liquid, with storage intermediate between the stages. Preferably, water is passed through a first zone (28) of a filter housing cavity and conducted through an intermediate port (16) to storage (24). When water is demanded by a usage device (22), water flows in reverse from storage back into the filter (10), to flow through the second zone (42) for a second stage of filtering/treatment, and then preferably out an outlet port (18) to the usage device. Water may also flow from the water source directly through the first and second zones (28, 42) and to the usage device (22), without intermediate storage. Preferably, both first and second zones are contained and axially arranged within a single filter housing (12). Preferably, water flows bi-directionally through a central return tube (26, 26''), or other axial passage (26') through the first zone media that connects to a combined outlet-inlet intermediate port (16) in or near the housing top wall, so that this tube or axial passage may be used as the collector for the first zone effluent and also the distributor for the second zone feed. Alternatively, a side-wall combined outlet-inlet intermediate port (16') may be used to conduct the inter-zone liquid to and from storage.
