    • A method of making a belt tensioner system, in which the system comprises a support unit, an endless transmission belt construction carried by the support unit and arranged to move in an endless path, an arm pivotally mounted to the support unit, a pulley rotatably carried by the arm and being in engagement with the belt construction, and an actuator carried by the support unit and having opposed ends is provided. The actuator has a movable piston projecting out of one of the opposed ends thereof and being in engagement with the arm to pivot the arm in a direction to urge the pulley into the belt construction as the piston is extended outwardly from the one end of the actuator, the other of the opposed ends of the actuator being pivotally mounted to the support unit whereby the actuator pivots relative to the support unit as the piston thereof extends and retracts at the one end thereof.

    • Apparatus for applying an optimum tensioning force to an endless belt or the like, including a pivot defining a first pivot axis, a belt engagement element supported for rotation about the first pivot axis, a biasing element for urging the belt engagement element in a first direction of rotation about the pivot axis into belt-tensioning engagement with the belt, and a belt tension adjuster, responsive to externally induced changes in tension of the belt, for automatically varying the tensioning force applied to belt.     • A tensioner acting on and allowing an endless transmission belt, stretched between a driving wheel and driven wheels supported on the body of an internal combustion engine, to run under a constant tension, wherein an oscillating lever supports a tension pulley pressed against a loosening side of the transmission belt and has a base end pivoted on the engine body, and an automatic adjuster connected to a tip end of the lever is supported on a case for a hydraulic pump of the engine. A spacer is interposed between contact portions of the oscillating lever and the engine body, and an outlet of the pump and an oil port of the adjuster are directly communicated. An adjusting screw is provided on the tip end of the oscillating lever and is operatively connected to the upper end of a plunger of the automatic adjuster. An auxiliary spring is further connected to the oscillating lever to assure the transmission belt of the constant tension, and the tension pulley supported on the oscillating lever is pressed against the transmission belt at a location close to the axis of an engine cylinder, that is, almost directly above the driving wheel, to thereby secure a sufficient space for installation of the automatic adjuster outside the pulley.

    • A hydraulic tensioning device for maintaining a predetermined amount of tensioning force on an endless drive belt of a vehicle accessories drive system. A housing is mounted in a fixed position on the engine in close proximity to the drive belt. A shaft is movably mounted within the housing by an elastomer block which biases the shaft in a belt tensioning rotational direction. A lever extends outwardly from the housing and is integrally connected to the shaft for pivotal movement upon rotation of the shaft. An expandable bladder or actuator is mounted in the housing and is engageable with the shaft and pivots the rotor and lever toward a belt tensioning direction when the bladder is expanded by hydraulic fluid. A hydraulic fluid supply and pump assembly supplies fluid under pressure to inflate the bladder. An idler pulley drivingly engages the fluid pump and is driven by the endless drive belt for actuating the pump. The elastomer block applies a pretensioning force on the drive belt with the hydraulically inflatable bladder supplying the major portion of the tensioning force when the vehicle engine is running. In one form of the invention, the fluid supply and pump assembly is mounted in the housing and the lever either moves a pivotally mounted vehicle accessory or moves an idler pulley into belt engagement to tension the belt. In another embodiment, the fluid supply and pump assembly is mounted on the extended end of the lever in engagement with an idler pulley which both tensions the belt and drives the fluid pump with the elastomer block, bladder and shaft being mounted in a fixed position on the engine.
