    • There is described a method for controlling the orientation and/or position of sheets (1) processed on a printing machine, each sheet being provided with at least one marking (12; 15) embedded in the sheet, which marking is embedded in the sheet during manufacturing thereof, prior to processing of the sheet on a printing machine. The marking (12; 15) is disposed in a selected location of the sheet and defines a unique orientation and/or position of the sheet. The method comprises the steps of:—checking for the presence or absence of the marking at the selected location on the sheet and/or of characteristic features of the said marking; and—issuing a warning signal if the marking is not detected at the selected location or if the characteristic features of the marking are not detected at the said selected location. The invention advantageously makes use of features already embedded in the sheets (such as metallic and/or magnetic strips or threads, watermarks, etc.) as control markings for controlling the orientation and/or position of the sheets.

    • An image forming device that is capable of performing transfer of paper constantly in a highly accurate manner, irrespective of types or conditions of paper. The image forming device is provided with a motion sensor in a paper transfer path thereof for detecting the surface condition of an idle roller moving in accordance with the paper, and transfer of the paper is controlled on the basis of surface condition signals generated by the motion sensor. The motion sensor makes laser light, which is irradiated by a semiconductor laser, hit on an outer peripheral surface of the idle roller that rotates accompanying the transfer of paper and the reflected light is received by a two-dimensional semiconductor image sensor. Then, the surface condition signals are detected on the basis of speckle patterns generated in the reflected light.

The method is accomplished by: determining the measurement of an edge of each mail piece that will be placed in a tray; determining the thickness of each mail piece that will be placed in the tray; determining the number of mail pieces that will be placed in the tray; calculating an incremental pattern dab that is going to be placed on the edge of each mail piece; placing a portion of the pattern on the edge of each mail piece that is going to form the mail pieces of the tray; and placing the mail pieces in the tray in an ordered manner so that the edges having dabs will be visible, and the dabs will form a pattern that indicates only the determined number of mail pieces are in the tray.

    • PURPOSE: A method for controlling ejection of a media sheet is provided to prevent insufficient ejection or excessive ejection and to reliably eject various types of media. CONSTITUTION: A method of controlling ejection of a media sheet(17) from an imaging apparatus(10) comprises steps of determining stiffness of the media sheet; using the stiffness to identify from a plurality of ejection sequences an optimized ejection sequence; and ejecting the media utilizing the optimized ejection sequence. The step of determining the stiffness further comprises a step of the imaging apparatus automatically determining the stiffness. The plurality of ejection sequences comprises a first sequence having a first ejection speed and a second sequence having a second ejection speed faster than the first ejection speed. A media sheet quality such as stiffness may be determined and utilized to select an optimized ejection sequence. A print job characteristic, such as the location of marking material on the media, may also be determined and utilized to select an optimized ejection sequence.
