    • An image control mirror, especially for trucks, commercial vehicles and the like, includes a housing, a transparent lens and a mirror-image providing surface on a member arranged within the housing. The surface can be located so as to extend to an angle in a range of about 2.25 or 2.3 to 3.9 times the distance in inches of transverse viewing width to the lens for safety to prevent glare and second and third images. Preferably, the angle is 3.4.degree. per inch of width of the mirror or 20.5.degree. in a six inch wide mirror that is sixteen inches high.

    • A system for simultaneously sensing, by means of photoresistors, ambient light and light from an energized headlamp from a vehicle following a vehicle, and in response to the signal outputs of the photo-resistors causing an oscillatory mirror to move selectively into proximity and parallel with a sheet of glass facing always rearwardly of the truck, or, into 45* relation to the pane of the glass. In the latter condition the mirror reflects light into a black absorbing surface, while the sheet of glass reflects light with low efficiency to the eyes of the driver of the truck, whereas in the former condition mirror reflects light with high efficiency to the eyes of the driver. The mirror is in the parallel position during daylight and at night if no following vehicle is close, but goes to the 45* position at night if a following headlamp is sensed. To avoid plural images, the mirror is made of a sheet of glass which is aluminum coated on its front surface, so that light does not pass through the glass of the mirror in proceeding from the following headlamp to the eye of the driver. Electric current is passed through the aluminum coating of the mirror to generate heat and thus to maintain the mirror and the inner surface of the first mentioned sheet of glass free of ice and fog.

    • A photoelectrically controlled rear-view mirror employs a first photocell to switch the mirror between ''''normal'''' and ''''adjusted'''' positions in response to incident light on the mirror, and a second photocell to monitor ambient light and prevent switching of the mirror to the ''''adjusted'''' position during daylight hours and at night where high ambient light conditions exist. Mirror switching is effected by a single electromagnet having a winding which conducts current in one direction or the other in accordance with the resistive states of the photocells. The electromagnet displaces an actuating cam to either of two stable positions in which the mirror is positioned in an adjusted or a normal position, respectively.
