The pressure switch can be made to communicate with the pressure-carrying suction chamber via a line in the housing and a conduit in the pump piston, the inlet of which conduit is controlled by the governor slide such that it is opened only whenever the outlet of a relief conduit is closed by the governor slide.

    • A fuel injection pump for Diesel engines in which a rotating and reciprocating piston pressurizes and distributes fuel to individual pressure lines leading to the injection valves of the engine. In order to change the timing of injection with respect to the engine cycle, there is provided a mechanism to change the relative angle between the pressurizing piston and its drive means, which runs in synchronism with the engine. The mechanism operates hydraulically and is affected by the fuel pressure in the sump of the injection pump. There is also provided a hydraulic control valve mechanism which permits varying amounts of fuel to flow back from the sump to the low pressure side of the fuel delivery pump, thereby changing the injection timing. A primary control valve adjusts the sump pressure on the basis of engine speed while a secondary control valve adjusts the sump pressure on the basis of engine temperature in order to adapt the timing of fuel injection to engine starting and engine warm-up. Various embodiments are presented.

    • A fuel injection pump for delivery of fuel under high pressure to combustion chambers and in which the fuel is delivered by a rotating and reciprocating pump piston. The relative angular position of the pump piston with respect to its drive shaft defines the timing of fuel injection. This timing is varied in accordance with engine speed by a hydraulic servo-mechanism which includes a piston moving against two springs, one of which comes into engagement before the other so that the change of injection timing as a function of engine speed follows two different curves.

    • An rpm regulator of a fuel injection pump for internal combustion engine includes a single-arm drag lever and an intermediate lever which are bent to define a space into which a compression spring extends. The stroke of the compression spring is limited in both directions by stops defined by the intermediate lever and the drag lever, respectively. The regulator also includes a control spring arrangement which engages one end of the drag lever, a fuel quantity setting member which engages one end of the intermediate lever and controls due to its movement the quantity of fuel delivered by the fuel pump and an rpm governor which exerts an rpm defendent force against the intermediate lever in opposition to the force of the control spring arrangement. With this regulator the pump can deliver an excess fuel quantity for starting purposes and an automatically reduced normal fuel injection quantity when the rpm increases. This result is accomplished without increasing the dimensions of the fuel pump.
