    • A downhole tool includes circumferentially spaced and/or angled transducer elements. In one embodiment a standoff sensor has at least three piezoelectric transducer elements, at least a first element of which is configured to both transmit and receive ultrasonic energy. At least second and third of the elements are configured to receive ultrasonic energy transmitted by the first element in pitch catch mode. An electronic controller is configured to calculate a standoff distance from the ultrasonic waveforms received at the first, the second, and the third piezoelectric transducer elements. The controller may further be configured to estimate the eccentricity of a measurement tool in the borehole. Exemplary embodiments of the invention may improve borehole coverage and data quality and reliability in LWD caliper logging. In particular, the invention may advantageously reduce or even eliminate blind spots when logging eccentric bore holes.

    • Various approaches are disclosed to provide improved compression and decompression of configuration data for use with programmable logic devices (PLDs). Uncompressed configuration data may comprise a plurality of rows. In accordance with one embodiment, a method of converting the uncompressed configuration data into compressed configuration data includes encoding a row of configuration data comprising only bulk erase bytes into a first bit pattern within a fixed length header. The method also includes encoding a number of continuous bulk erase bytes of configuration data in a row that includes more than bulk erase bytes into a second bit pattern within the fixed length header. The method further includes encoding at least a portion of a row of configuration data according to a Lempel-Ziv (LZ) compression process into a third bit pattern within the fixed length header.

    • Aspects of this invention include a downhole tool having first and second radially offset ultrasonic standoff sensors and a controller including instructions to determine at least one of a drilling fluid acoustic velocity and a drilling fluid attenuation coefficient from the reflected waveforms received at the standoff sensors. The drilling fluid acoustic velocity may be determined via processing the time delay between arrivals of a predetermined wellbore reflection component at the first and second sensors. The drilling fluid attenuation coefficient may be determined via processing amplitudes of the predetermined wellbore reflection coefficients. The invention advantageously enables the acoustic velocity and attenuation coefficient of drilling fluid in the borehole annulus to be determined in substantially real-time.

    • The present invention discloses a method for balancing the data access to a non-volatile memory by sorting a block number of an unwritten memory block of a non-volatile memory with a queue structure. If the data in any memory block of the non-volatile memory is erased, the block number of the memory block in which the data is erased will be appended to the tail of the queue. If a data is written into the non-volatile memory, a block number of the memory block is obtained from the head of the queue and the desired data is written into the memory block with the corresponding block number, and in the meanwhile the block number is deleted from the queue.
