    • The invention provides a process for producing a modified conjugated diene based polymer which attains favorable interaction between a rubber component and carbon black and/or silica, thereby improving dispersibility of the fillers, and which exhibits excellent properties such as heat-buildup-suppressing performance, fracture characteristics, and wear resistance; a modified conjugated diene based polymer produced through the process; a rubber composition containing the diene polymer; and a tire produced from the rubber composition and exhibiting the above properties. The process for producing a modified conjugated diene based polymer includes a step (a) of reacting a silicon compound with a conjugated diene based polymer having an active end so that the reaction takes place at the active end, the silicon compound having a protected primary amino group in the molecule thereof and a bi-functional silicon atom to which a hydrocarbyloxy group and a reactive group including a hydrocarbyloxy group are bonded, to thereby modify the active end, and a step (b) of performing condensation reaction which involves the compound having a bi-functional silicon atom, in the presence of a titanium compound serving as a titanium-based condensation-accelerating agent.

    • The invention provides chain-coupled polymeric sulfide compounds for use as the elastomeric component in vulcanizable elastomeric compositions comprising silica, carbon black or mixtures thereof. In particular, the invention provides anionically polymerized polymers having polymer chain living ends that are functionalized with sulfide groups and coupled together by a metal or nonmetal atom. The chain-coupled polymeric sulfide compounds have an initial high viscosity for ease of handling prior to compounding, a stable viscosity during storage, and a decreased compound viscosity for better filler dispersion and improved mixing efficiency. The invention further provides a pneumatic tire having at least one component produced from the vulcanizable elastomeric composition of the invention. A tire tread produced from vulcanized elastomers exhibiting these improved properties will exhibit reduced hysteresis resulting in an increase in rebound and improved rolling resistance and wet traction.

    • A method for controlling any increase in Mooney viscosity during aging of siloxane-functionalized polymers includes the step of adding a viscosity stabilizing effective amount of a viscosity stabilizing agent selected from the group consisting of alkyl alkoxysilanes of the structural formula R1nSi(OR2)4-n wherein R1 is selected from the group consisting of C1 to C20 alkyl, C4 to C10 cycloalkyl, or C5 to C20 aromatic groups, wherein R2 may be the same as or different from R1 and is selected from the group consisting of C1 to C20 alkyl, C4 to C10 cycloalkyl, or C5 to C20 aromatic groups, and wherein n is an integer from 1 to 3. The method provides for the stabilization of Mooney viscosity of siloxane-functionalized polymers at any given level upon aging. The viscosity stabilizing agents react with the siloxane-functionalized polymers during hydrolysis of the siloxane end groups to form moisture stabilized polymers.

    • Amino alkoxy-modified silsesquioxanes (amino AMS), and/or amino co-AMS compounds that also comprise a mercaptosilane or a blocked mercaptosilane, are excellent adhesives for coating plated or unplated metal wire for adherence of the wire to a rubber stock. The amino AMS and/or the amino/mercaptan co-AMS adhesives can be used with all types of rubber and there is no requirement for the use of special adhesive additives to the rubber vulcanizates, such as, but not limited to, cobalt, resins and high sulfur levels. In particular, the use of amino AMS and/or amino/mercaptan co-AMS compounds as adhesives for bonding wire to rubber also improves the adherence performance of the reinforcements to obtain sufficient bonding that is resistant to degradation over the course of time, especially resistance to thermal aging and/or thermo-oxidizing aging, in particular corrosion in the presence of water. Vulcanized rubber compositions that contain an amino AMS and/or amino/mercaptan co-AMS compound also have improved adhesion to embedded uncoated steel after humidity aging compared with vulcanized rubber compositions not containing the amino alkoxy-modified silsesquioxane.
