    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rubber composition capable of improving fuel efficiency, breaking strength and processability in a well-balanced manner, and to provide a pneumatic tire using the same.SOLUTION: The rubber composition contains: a conjugated diene-based polymer obtained by reacting an active terminal of a copolymer, obtained by polymerizing a conjugated diene compound and a monomer component containing a silicon-containing vinyl compound using a polymerization initiator represented by formula (I), with a compound containing a nitrogen atom and/or a silicon atom; silica; and a silane coupling agent having a mercapto group, wherein the content of the conjugated diene-based polymer is 25-50 mass% in 100 mass% of a rubber component, the content of the silica relative to 100 pts.mass of the rubber component is 40-80 pts.mass, and the content of the silane coupling agent relative to 100 pts.mass of the silica is 1-20 pts.mass.
