    • PURPOSE:To enable neutral light control by forming a common electrode on a counter substrate of 2 kinds of thin films; a thin metallic film and a transparent electrode and bringing the transparent electrode into contact with a liquid crystal layer so that the light valve can deal sufficiently with driving of TFT (thin-film transistors). CONSTITUTION:The common electrode on the counter substrate 101 is formed of two kinds of the thin films; the thin metallic film 102 and the transparent electrode 103 and the transparent electrode 103 is brought into contact with the liquid crystal layer 105. Since the thin metallic film 102 acts in an auxiliary manner to maintain sufficiently low resistance even if the transparent electrode 103 is set thin, the resistance value of the common electrode is sufficiently lowered. Further, the flawing of the thin metallic film 102 surface in a rubbing treatment at the time of a liquid crystal orientation treatment is obviated and the good oriented state is maintained by setting the transparent electrode 103 to the liquid crystal layer 105 side. The practicable use of the low-resistance common electrode which can deal sufficiently with the driving of the TFTs is thereby enabled and the neutral light control is enabled as well.

    • PURPOSE:To execute color separation and color synthesis of transmitted light of a prism effectively by constructing a cube prism by allowing each vertex of four rectangular prisms having thin film layers for selectively reflecting color light on two edges forming a right angle therebetween to contact coincidently. CONSTITUTION:Thin film layers for selectively reflecting red(R) and blue(B) color light from each dichroic mirror are formed on two edges of a rectangular prism 20 forming a right angle therebetween, by vapor deposition. The four rectangular prisms 20 are allowed to contact so as the vertex of each right angle coincide to each other and allowing one of the two edges forming a right angle of the rectangular prism 20 to contact, thus forming a cube prism 30. White light 31 is made incident to a surface of the cube prism 30 at right angles, and separated into three primary colors R, B, and G by the respective selective reflection film. Since the cube prism is constituted of four rectangular prisms, transmitted light through the prism is converted completely to color synthesized light or color separated light.

    • PURPOSE:To reduce optical loss at the time of optically modulating a TN liquid crystal light valve as low as possible, to improve light using efficiency and to obtain a projection image with high luminance by using a dichroic prism having selective polarized light separating characteristics in addition to color selective reflection characteristics for color separation and color synthesis. CONSTITUTION:The titled device is constituted of an illuminating system, a dichroic mirror system for separating white light into color beams, a TN liquid crystal light valve 207 for forming an image by using plural color beams, a dichroic mirror system for synthesizing the color beams, and a projecting optical system. The dichroic mirror systems for color synthesis and color separation are dichroic prisms 202, 208 having polarized light separating characteristics selectively reflecting incident polarized light having a polarizing axis almost vertical to an incident plane on the dichroic mirror surface. Since the dichroic prisms 202, 208 are used for color separation and color synthesis, a highly reliable display device having high luminance can be obtained.

    • PURPOSE:To improve the contrast of a liquid crystal panel, and to improve the contrast of a liquid crystal panel, by constituting the titled display so that a liquid crystal molecule becomes roughly a vertical orientation or a hybrid orientation against a substrate, when no voltage is applied, and the liquid crystal goes to roughly horizontal against the substrate and a 90 deg. twist structure, at the time of application of a voltage. CONSTITUTION:Upper and lower polarizing plates 11, 12 are installed so as to cross vertically polarizing axes 56, 57. Oriented films on glass substrates 13, 14 are formed by superposing vertical oriented films 16, 17 on horizontal oriented films 15, 18 (an oblique vapor-deposited film of an inorganic matter or an organic film for rubbing). Also, oriented films on the glass substrates 13, 14 have a structure which has super posed horizontal oriented films 15, 18 on vertical oriented films 16, 17. In such cases, a liquid crystal 19 whose dielectric anisotropy iis negative forms a vertical orientation, at the time of no voltage is applied, and becomes a horizontal twist arrangement, at the time of a voltage is applied. Also, in case one of the glass plates is the horizon tal oriented film 15 and the other substrate is a laminated structure of the horizontal oriented film 17 and the vertical oriented film 18, it is also allowed that the horizontal oriented film 17 and the vertical oriented film 18 are laminated in reverse in its upper and lower parts.
