摘要： Articles are formed of materials which have at least one layer comprising a mixture of thermoplastic and other fibers. This latter layer may be thermobonded together and then densified along at least a section of the eventual peripheral edge margin of an article to be formed from the material. Thermoplastic material containing cover sheets may also be secured to the core and densified in this manner. The entire eventual peripheral edge margin of the article is typically densified. The material is cut within the densified region or slightly outside the densified region to provide a soft peripheral edge. Absorbent materials may be thermobonded within the layer and surrounded by a densified edge to fix them within the article. The composite materials are used in manufacturing infant car seat liners and other articles. In addition, sections of the material may be densified and provided with weakened areas, such as perforations, to enable users to selectively separate the articles along the perforations.

摘要： A new concept in polymeric prosthetic devices having a portion thereof composed of a hydrophilic polymer is described herein in which distortions and stresses upon the device due to water absorption are minimized or eliminated. Physical properties of the various portions of the device may thus be varied to provide the particular physical parameters required. Compositions of matter and methods of manufacturing the novel prosthetic devices are described. The composition of matter is a polymer which includes a water soluble solid inert substance removable by exposure to water during hydration of the hydrophilic portion of the device, thus eliminating distortions and stresses therein. The hydrophilic polymer described is useful, for example, as one component part of such prosthetic devices as a hard-soft contact lens, cardiovascular implants, etc. useful in aqueous environment wherein stress and deformation of the polymer shape due to hydration must be minimized.

摘要： The invention is based on the discovery that the wood of certain trees having genetically modified lignins has plastic properties far greater than that of trees of the general population of the same species. In particular, trees have been found to have significantly increased plasticity in which the lignin is of a less crosslinked or more linear type, of lower molecular weight, of a relatively higher content of lignin precursor monomers or oligomers, or is more readily extractable by the usual methods. Wood from these trees can be readily molded by pressure and heat into two or three dimensional articles. The ability to be molded can be significantly enhanced by the addition of plasticizers.

The finished contact lenses each contain short segments of the identifying means thereby allowing classification of the contact lenses as to right or left eye, magnification power or other characteristic.
