    • A method and apparatus for modulating an optical signal, and a method for fabricating such an apparatus. The modulator comprises a membrane having at least one layer, and a substrate, spaced to form a air gap. The membrane is suspended in a first position over the substrate by a flexible support arrangement such that the size of the air gap may vary. The layers of the membrane are formed so that the refractive indices of such layers have a particular relationship to the refractive index of the substrate, and have a particular thickness. Bias is applied to the membrane and the substrate to create a force that causes the membrane to change its position relative to the substrate, causing the size of the air gap to change. The reflectivity of the device to an optical signal varies as the size of the air gap changes.

    • A dilute mixture of a large organic parent compound in an inert diluent is formed using a specially designed diffusion cell to control the amount of parent compound that is taken up by the diluent gas. The dilute mixture flows through a hot pyrolyzing tube where the parent compound is decomposed solely and totally by a gas phase unimolecular reaction into equimolar amounts of reactive gas and a stable reaction product. The method produces an internal standard for determining the concentration of the reactive gas since the stoichiometry of the reaction requires that the concentration of the reactive gas be equal to the concentration of the other reaction product, which can be easily calibrated by standard methods.

    • A fluid flow rotary driven apparatus includes a support having an axis of rotation and a plurality of elongate, curved rotor wings attached to and extending outwardly from the support. Each wing is attached to the support at an inner end and projects outwardly in a direction transverse to the axis of rotation to a distal end. Each wing includes a convex surface defining a plurality of logarithmic spiral line segments interconnecting the inner and outer ends. Each spiral line segment extends completely within a respective plane transverse to the axis of rotation. The wings are responsive to a fluid flow across the outer surface of the wings for driving the support to turn about the axis of rotation. A rotary transmission device is operably connected to the support and responds to turning of the support for producing an energy output.

    • An exterior surface has a vertical mid-plane and a horizontal aperture there through. An annular recess is provided at the vertical mid-plane. The exterior surface has planar end faces parallel with each other. The horizontal aperture has opposed frusto-conical surfaces with a central axis.
