摘要： An optical scanning device for scanning a first optical record carrier, a second, different, optical record carrier and a third, different, optical record carrier, each record carrier having an information layer. The scanning device includes a radiation source system arranged to produce first, second and third radiation beams for scanning the first, second and third record carriers with first, second and third wavelengths, respectively; and a diffraction structure ( 34 ) arranged to introduce a first, second and third wavefront modification into the first, second and third radiation beams, respectively. The diffraction structure includes a surface having a plurality of steps ( 38 ), each step having a step height (h j ) which controls a form of the first, second and third wavefront modifications, characterized in that the diffraction structure is formed from a material having an Abbe number of less than 50, whereby dispersion is provided between the first, second and third wavelengths in order to further control the form of the first, second and third wavefront modifications.

摘要： A switchable optical element having an optical path (OP) for a radiation beam and having a first state and a second state, the element comprising: a first fluid (12) and a second, different, fluid (14) which are immiscible and which are separated from each other by a fluid meniscus (16); a first, transparent, wall part and a second, transparent, wall part spaced from each other along the optical path; and a fluid switching system which is arranged to apply forces to the first and/or the second fluid in order to switch the element between the first and the second state. The first wall part includes a non-planar wavefront modifier (28), and wherein the fluid switching system is arranged to apply the forces so that when the element is in the first state, the first wall part is covered by the first fluid (12); and when the element is in the second state, the first wall part is covered by the second fluid (14). The switchable optical element is characterised in that the fluid switching system is arranged to switch between the first state and the second state such that when the element is in the first state the second wall part is covered by the second fluid, and when the element is in the second state the second wall part is covered by the first fluid. When the element is in both the first state and the second state, at least part of the fluid meniscus (16) is located on the optical path.

摘要： An optical scanning device ( 1 ) is for scanning an information layer ( 2 ) by means of a radiation beam ( 4 ). The device includes a radiation source ( 7 ) for supplying said radiation beam, an objective lens ( 10 ) for transforming said radiation beam into a scanning spot ( 19 ) at the position of the information layer, and a beam intensity modifier ( 8 ) for redistributing the intensity (I 2 ) over the cross-section of said radiation beam in order to change the size of said scanning spot. The beam intensity modifier has an entrance pupil ( 8 a) and an exit pupil ( 8 b). Furthermore, it is arranged so that any ray of said radiation beam entering said beam intensity modifier at a distance r 1 from the central ray of that beam reflects at least twice between said entrance and exit pupils that the transverse magnification M of said modifier is defined by a decreasing function of the distance r 1 .

摘要： This invention relates to an optical scanning device for scanning an optical record carrier and detecting a tilt characteristic of the optical record carrier during scanning. 摘要： A dual-stack optical data storage medium (20) is described for read out using a focused radiation beam (29) with a wavelength of 400 - 410 nm and a Numerical Aperture (NA) of 0.84 - 0.86. The medium has a substrate (21) and a first stack of layers named L0 (22) comprising a first information layer and a second stack of layers named L1 (23), comprising a second information layer. A radiation beam (29) transparent spacer layer (24) is present between L0 and L1. A transmission stack named TS0 with a thickness d TS0 and an effective refractive index n TS0 contains all layers between L0 and an entrance face (26) of the medium (20). A transmission stack named TS1 with a thickness d TS1 and an effective refractive index n TS1 containing all layers between L1 and the entrance face (26). The spacer layer (24) has a thickness selected from the range 20 - 30 µm, the thickness D TS0 in dependence on the refractive index n TS0 and the thickness D TS1 in dependence on the refractive index n TS0 are within a specified area. In this way a reliable read out of both the first and the second information layer of respectively L0 and L1 is achieved.
