    • A method for operating a power controller in a wireless communication device is provided that includes generating a power controller output signal using an open loop polar modulation scheme. The power controller output signal is operable to control the power delivered to a high-band power amplifier and a low-band power amplifier. A band state is determined for the wireless communication device. The power controller output signal is provided to the high-band power amplifier when the band state is a high-band state and to the low-band power amplifier when the band state is a low-band state.

    • Leakage currents at IC inputs can be avoided while the IC is disabled by providing a switch that is responsive to deactivation of an enable input to isolate functional circuitry of the IC from one of the power supply nodes of the IC. This eliminates power supply current while the IC is disabled. Further unwanted current flow can be avoided while the IC is disabled by providing a switch that is responsive to the enable input for selectively connecting and disconnecting the base of a reference voltage transistor to and from the transistor's grounded collector, which collector is defined by the substrate of the IC. Disconnection of the base from the grounded substrate/collector eliminates base current and thus prevents emitter-to-collector current flow through the transistor when the IC is disabled.

    • A sub-bandgap reference circuit yielding a reference voltage smaller than the bandgap voltage of silicon. The circuit generates a negative temperature coefficient signal Vbe and an oppositely tracking (positive temperature coefficient) &Dgr;Vbe, and takes the average of two signals related to &Dgr;Vbe-Vbe to yield a temperature-compensated voltage of one-half the bandgap voltage of silicon. The circuit features an unequal area current mirror feeding the diodes and resistors used to generate the &Dgr;Vbe-Vbe signals using low supply voltages (less than 1.5 volts). A standard CMOS implementation provides low power consumption at a supply voltage of only 1 volt with a good temperature coefficient. The averaging circuit may be implemented by a continuous time divider or by using switched capacitor techniques. The loop amplifier used in the &Dgr;Vbe-Vbe circuitry operates with low headroom in part due to a n-well biasing scheme that lowers the effective threshold voltage of the p-channel FETs used in the loop amplifier.
