    • A universal telephone located in a foreign country provides a consistent home country telephone appearance and functions for a caller visiting the foreign country. This service includes providing consistent dialing sequences, consistent directory services, and other operations that would be consistent with originating the call from the caller's home country. The universal telephone includes a smart card reader that receives a smart card presented by the caller, bearing information of the caller's ID, the caller's home country, and other information. A database of national telephone features that are characteristic of the caller's home country can be included in the universal telephone or can be contained on the smart card. When the caller inserts his smart card into the universal telephone, the caller's home country information is read from the card. The universal telephone accesses the database to obtain the telephone appearance and functions of the home country. The text of messages in the language of the home country is displayed on a display screen of the universal phone. The image of the dialing key pad is also displayed on the display screen. The action to be performed in response to each key is provided to logic associated with a touch overlay device positioned on the surface of the display screen. When the caller presses the touch overlay device at a location over the image of a key, the corresponding action is performed by the logic. Actions include forming a string of dialing digits in the home country's format, for transmission to a universal server, which translates it into a network code that enables establishment of the call.

    • In accordance with a method of managing network capacity, simulation data is received from a simulation system based on at least one metric associated with a plurality of communication links interconnecting at least two endpoints. The simulation data indicates impact of a communication link to be taken offline a plurality of alternate communication links. It is determined whether the simulation data associated with at least one communication link satisfies at least one predetermined criterion. Further, at least one metric of the simulation system is periodically updated based on real-time data associated with the plurality of communication links. The simulation data from the simulation system based on the updated at least one metric is received. Thereafter, load from the communication link to be taken offline is selectively moved to an alternate communication link based on whether the simulation data associated with the alternate communication link satisfies the at least one predetermined criterion.

    • A method is disclosed for determining a mitigation strategy to limit a potential source of interference on an Internet Protocol television (IPTV) system. A new user installation request is received at a server in the IPTV system. A first geographical location of a customer premises associated with the new user installation request is received. A second geographical location of an amplitude modulation broadcasting facility is received. The first geographical location and the second geographical location are plotted. A first distance between the first geographical location and the second geographical location is determined. A first signal transmission power rating for the amplitude modulation broadcasting facility is retrieved. A first mitigation strategy to limit a first interference of the amplitude modulation broadcasting facility on an IPTV signal provided to the first geographical location when the first distance is less than the first threshold distance is determined.
