    • A method for selectable quantization for use in an encoder for compressing video and/or audio data includes processing that begins by receiving discrete cosine transform data of an encoded signal. The processing continues by obtaining a quantization table. The processing then continues by obtaining a plurality of scaling factors. The process then continues by generating a plurality of quantized value sets of the discrete cosine transform data based on the quantization table and the plurality of quantization scaling factors. The resulting data is then multiplied separately by each of the quantization scaling factors to produce the plurality of quantized values sets. The process then continues by selecting one of the plurality of quantized value sets based on quantization selection criteria.

    • A multiple device frame synchronization method and apparatus utilizes events completion signaling between multiple devices, such as multiple graphics processors. The signaling serves as a stall command for stalling graphics data rendering commands in a command FIFO of the rendering engine of a graphics processor in response to a rendering complete signal, or other event signal generated by the other graphics processor. Accordingly, the processor that, for example, completes a current frame relay is stalled until the other processor has completed its rendering function for a particular odd line, even line, entire frame or partial frame as desired.

    • A multimedia program type of a received multimedia data is determined. Based on the determined multimedia program type, a peak bit rate limit and/or an average bit rate limit are determined. In instances where a transrated version of the multimedia data is to be stored, a remaining storage capacity of a storage device is determined and the peak bit rate limit and/or the average bit rate limit can be adjusted based on the remaining storage capacity. The multimedia data then is transrated to generate transrated multimedia data that has a peak bit rate that does not exceed the selected peak bit rate limit and/or having an average bit rate that does not exceed the selected average bit rate limit. The transrating of the multimedia additionally can include the application of rule sets based on content characteristics. After transrating, the multimedia data can be transmitted via a network to a destination multimedia device, stored locally for subsequent use, or a combination thereof.
