    • PURPOSE: To obtain a highly heat-insulating pressure medium which is free from cracks or chips by specifying the ratio of components and the properties of zirconia powder respectively, in a powder molding consisting of sodium chloride, zirconia powder and/or partially stabilized zirconia powder. CONSTITUTION: This pressure medium for ultrahigh pressure generation contains sodium chloride, zirconia and/or partially stabilized zirconia as constituent components. For the distribution of zirconia grain size, at least, 30wt.% of the particle ranging from 45 to 150μm in grain diameter is used. In addition, 80 to 150 pts.wt. of zirconia are blended based on 100 pts.wt. of sodium chloride. When thus the distribution of zirconia grain size is optimized and the presence of an appropriate amount of zirconia is allowed, the relative density of the pressure medium is appropriate, and the pressure medium is almost free from cracks or chips. The partially stabilized zirconia used for the pressure medium is a solid solution of Y2 O3 , MgO or CaO dissolved in zirconia. The smaller the grain size of zirconia, the lower will be the density of the pressure medium, so that the cracks or chips tend to generate easily.
