    • Disclosed is a method for converting perylen-3,4:9,10-tetracarboxylic acid diimides of general formula I in which R and R represent unbranched, branched, or cyclical C1-C8-alkyl, into a form that is suitable for use as a fluorescent dye by a) solving or suspending the perylen-3,4:9,10-tetracarboxylic acid diimides in an organic or inorganic solvent, the molecules of which have a molecular volume of = 230 ANGSTROM , at 0 to 250 DEG C; b1) cooling the solution obtained in step a) to or below the crystallization temperature and at the same time optionally removing excess solvent until crystals start forming in case an organic solvent is used or adding water or diluted aqueous solutions of the solvent until crystals start forming in case an inorganic solvent is used, and maintaining said solution at said temperature for further crystallization; or b2) cooling the suspension obtained in step a) to or below the crystallization temperature if the temperature in step a) was above the crystallization temperature and maintaining the suspension at said temperature for further crystallization; c) isolating the solvate crystals formed in step b); and d) then removing the solvent from the solvate crystals. Also disclosed are novel crystalline forms of perylen-3,4:9,10-tetracarboxylic acid diimides.
