    • When a hardware or software problem reoccurs, a customer is rarely able to remember and repeat the process that was performed by a customer service representative to correct the problem the first time. By capturing desktop events and/or one or more other available data streams during the first customer service engagement, and making a document containing that data available to the customer, the customer can solve a reoccurrence of the problem without having to contact the customer service center. The captured data is integrated into a single multimedia document, which has an indexing capability, highlights critical information, and includes annotations and/or comments. The integrated multimedia document can be distributed to the customer by the customer service representative during an engagement, over a customer accessible network site visited by the customer, or in a CD-ROM provided with the product.

    • In a document search and retrieval system, document images are segmented into layout objects. Each layout object identifies different structural elements in a document image. In addition, the system computes attributes and features for each segmented layout object. Before any document images are transmitted between a client and a server, users specify which document image attributes and features are most relevant to their browsing or searching tasks. Transmission (and/or display) of document images is then divided into two stages. During the first stage, those layout objects which are identified as having the specified features or attributes are transmitted at a first or high resolution; the remaining layout objects in an image are transmitted at a second or lower resolution (or in the form of bounding polygons). If the second stage is invoked, those remaining layout objects are re-transmitted at the first or high resolution. The second stage of transmission may be invoked when either a user request is received or when there is a system timeout.

    • A top-down technique for character text recognition of an image comprises a left-to-right analysis of each image line. A current image portion is selected. Possible text prefixes are selected from a dictionary. The upper and lower text contours of the text prefixes are compared with a bitmap of the current image portion. A distance value is generated, indicating the quality of the comparison. The prefixes are then added to an agenda of prefixes. Based on the distance value, corresponding to the similarity of the upper shapes and lower shapes of the possible prefix to the bitmap of the image portion, a list of the text prefixes generating the best distance values is selected from the agenda. From the selected list, a new list of extended text prefixes is obtained from the dictionary and added to the agenda. The process is repeated until the current image portion ends. At this point, the possible text prefix having the best total distance value is selected as the list of text characters corresponding to the image portion. The total distance value is the sum of all of the distance values of the text characters forming the text prefix. Possible text words are selected from the agenda based on beam searching techniques against either a threshold or by limiting the number of possible text prefixes selected to a predetermined number of the currently most probable text prefixes.
