[Class 38 (iv)] In carbon pile resistance regulators in which the pressure depends upon a rotor located between the poles of the controlling electromagnet, the length of the rotor is at least as great as its diameter with the object of reducing inertia and so obtaining quick response without reducing torque. The rotor 1 is arranged between the poles of the electromagnet 5 having a winding 6, and its shaft 2 at one end applies pressure to the carbon pile 9 and at the other end is acted upon by a spring 12. The rate of the spring 12 may be varied by screwing it more or less upon a screw 15 connected to an adjustable bracket 11 as described in Specification 427,976, a locking member for the spring being provided. The spring 26 which acts upon the end of the carbon pile 9 through a lever 21 is adjusted by screwing its abutment 27 into or out of the tube 25. A partition on the back plate 10 co-operates with a partition on the cover 101 to separate the carbon pile from the rotor and other mechanism, the former being ventilated while the latter is protected from dust &c. Specification 414,122 also is referred to.
