    • A thermal printer for printing on a continuous print medium by ink transfer from a thermal print ribbon has a print head which is pivotally mounted and which is driven in an oscillatory nodding motion by means of a stepper motor so as repeatedly to bring a linear array of energizable printing elements to bear against a platen roller. Both the element array and the platen extend transversely to respective paths of travel of the print medium and the ribbon. The print medium is fed through the printer from an inlet region, between the platen and print head, and thence to an outlet region. The instantaneous rate of travel of the print medium past the print head is substantially the same as the rate of feed of print medium to the printer. Typically this rate is of the order of 250 to 400 mm per second. The ribbon also travels between the print head and the platen, overlying the print medium and is driven in such a manner that it travels at the same rate as the print medium during each printing operation. Between each printing operation the ribbon is driven in reverse to rewind any unused portion of ribbon which has overshot the printhead.

    • A method and apparatus for low cost thermal printing in a thermal printer having a software controlled thermal print head that moves in relation to a print ribbon disposed adjacent to a print area of a printed medium. The thermal print head is selectively energized to heat the print ribbon which deposits the ink onto the printed medium as the print head moves in relation to the print ribbon in a print stroke. The cost of printing is decreased by efficient use of the ink on the print ribbon. Between print strokes, the print ribbon is displaced an incremental interval to position an unused portion of the print ribbon for printing on the printed medium during a subsequent print stroke. The precise displacement of the print ribbon may be software controlled based on the detection of indices disposed at spaced intervals along the print ribbon which further increases the efficient usage of ink on the print ribbon. The utilization of ink on the print ribbon is made more efficient by a software controlled generation of an italic or gray shade character font, which require less ink than solid block character fonts. Using less ink on the print ribbon, permits a decrease in the print ribbon displacement interval between print strokes, and also permits some portions of the print ribbon to be over-lapped by the print head during a subsequent print stroke. The utilization of ink on the print ribbon may also be made more efficient by mechanical or software controlled linear and lateral shifts of the printed characters during subsequent print strokes, which permits the utilization of ink between areas on the print ribbon where ink was depleted in a previous print stroke.

    • A printer having a print ribbon feed mechanism is disclosed which allows optimal feeding of a print ribbon, eliminating unnecessary consumption of the ribbon. The mechanism includes first and second clamp means mounted on a stationary section and a print carrier of the machine, respectively, which are both controlled in accordance with movement of a print head from and to a print enabling position. Means are provided which are connected to a carrier indexing mechanism for impositively driving print ribbon supply and takeup spools disposed on the stationary section to wind a print ribbon onto them during a carrier return operation whereas they allow the ribbon to be unwound from the ribbon spools when the carrier advances.

    • Disclosed is a drive for a ribbon disc (20) for a printer (10), the printer (10) including a printwheel (12) mounted for rotation on the shaft (15) of a printwheel driver (16) and intermediate a print hammer (18) and print receiving means (40). The printwheel driver (16) is connected to the printwheel (12) for effecting rotation thereto to position predetermined petals (14) of the printwheel (12) opposite the hammer (18). A ribbon disc (20) is interposed intermediate the printwheel (12) and the print receiving means (40) and clutch means (31), in one embodiment, is connected to the shaft (15) for coupling and uncoupling the ribbon disc (20) to and from the printwheel driver (16) dependent upon the direction of rotation of the printwheel (12). In a second embodiment, wherein the printwheel is mounted in a protective cartridge (70), the ribbon disc (20) is also mounted in the cartridge (70) and the known biasing spring is modified slightly to form a clutch (75) to first inhibit the rotation of the ribbon disc (20) when the printwheel (12) rotates and allow the rotation of the ribbon disc (20) when the printwheel (12) rotates in the opposite direction.
