    • A liquid crystal display (LCD) using a plasma addressing method includes a sequentially arranged face plate, intermediary plate, and rear plate separated from each other by predetermined distances; a liquid crystal portion including a liquid crystal material between said face and intermediary plates for displaying an image in accordance with the arrangement of the liquid crystal material; and a plasma portion formed by sealing a discharge gas between the intermediary and rear plates for rearranging the liquid crystal material by adjusting the discharging state of the discharge gas. The LCD has AC voltage-supply parallel column electrodes on the inner surface of the face plate for supplying a constant frequency AC voltage, data signal-supply anodes on the inner surface of the rear plate for supplying data signals, and line scanning signal-supplying cathodes insulated from and at right angles to the data signal-supply anodes on the inner surface of the rear plate for supplying line scanning signals. A driving method of the display is also provided. Both the liquid crystal portion and the plasma addressing portion can be driven by just one driving IC which reduces manufacturing cost and enhances the display's response.

    • A plasma addressing structure functioning as a display panel (52) includes an ionizable gas captured within a network (110) of intersecting channels formed by multiple spaced-apart islands (60) arranged in substantially parallel rows (62) projecting from the major surface (104) of an underlying substrate (64). The network of channels includes elongated channels (112) that are positioned between adjacent rows of islands, and spur channels (114) that extend between individual islands in each row and couple adjacent elongated channels. The gas in the network of channels is selectively ionized to address display elements (54), which are aligned with the islands positioned along each of the island rows. Each island has a top surface or plateau (128) that is spaced-apart from and substantially parallel to the major surface from which the island projects. The plateaus provide a relatively large surface area for supporting addressing structure components such as a layer (68) of electro-optic material and a layer (96) of dielectric material.

    • A plasma addressing display device has a flat panel structure in which a display cell and a plasma cell are stacked to each other. The plasma cell has discharge electrodes formed on a lower substrate in such a manner as to extend along the discharge channels, and barrier ribs formed in such a manner as to partition adjacent ones of the discharge channels from each other. The feature of the present invention lies in the discharge electrodes. The discharge electrode is composed of a pair of longitudinal electrode portions disposed on both sides of the barrier rib, and a plurality of crossarm electrode portions disposed on the underside of the barrier rib in such a manner as to connect the longitudinal electrode portions to each other. The discharge electrode has a ladder structure as a whole. Such an electrode structure is effective to increase the adhesive strength of the barrier ribs against the lower substrate, to reduce the resistance of the discharge electrodes, and to prevent occurrence of disconnection of the discharge electrodes.

    • A display device comprising a channel plate (39) having channels (30, 30′, 30″) containing an ionizable gas (33), and walls of the channels (30, 30′, 30″) being provided with electrodes (31, 32) for selectively ionizing the ionizable gas (33) during operation. The color filter substrate includes: a second substrate; a color filter layer provided on the second substrate; a plurality of strip electrodes provided on the color filter layer so as to extend in a direction orthogonal to the plurality of strip plasma discharge channels. A picture element is defined by a region where adjacent two of the plasma discharge channels overlap one of the plurality of strip electrodes.
