    • In order to enable one's position to be easily found on a traditional map having its own co-ordinate system distinct from a wide-area co-ordinate system, data is associated with the map from which the relationship between the map co-ordinate system and the wide-area co-ordinate system can be determined and an apparatus is provided which has a reader (18) for reading the data associated with the map. The apparatus also has a memory (34) for storing the read data, a GPS receiver (30) for receiving transmissions from GPS satellites and determining the position of the receiving means in terms of the wide-area co-ordinate system, a processor (28) for processing the determined wide-area co-ordinate position and the stored data to determine the position of the receiving means in terms of the map co-ordinate system, and a display (24) or the like for annunciating to a user the determined map co-ordinate position. The data associated with the map preferably also includes information on the area covered by the map. The map may be one of a series of maps or part of an atlas, the data relating to all of the maps in the series or atlas.

    • A system for indicating to aircraft passengers the approximate location of the aircraft. The system includes the aircraft navigation equipment (10), adapted to generate navigation signals indicative of the aircraft's position. A computer (20) receives the navigation signals and is adapted to correlate the aircraft position to a particular sector of a map (60) of the ground area to be overflown during the flight. The computer (20) generate a display signal indicative of the particular map sector. One or more visual display units (40) are mounted in the aircraft passenger compartment and are coupled to the computer. The display unit (40) provides a visual identification of the map sector then being overflown. Passengers may be provided with maps and map overlays which divide the map into predetermined sectors. By correlating the visual information to the map, the passenger may determine the approximate location of the aircraft, and hence identify visible landmarks, follow the aircraft's movement and so on. The computer may also control an audio message unit (50), coupled to the aircraft audio system (55) and adapted to issue predetermined audio messages in dependence upon the particular map sector being overflown.

    • Moving map and other navigational display systems are disclosed herein which provide indications of relative position between a vehicle such as an aircraft and the terrain or other point(s) of reference. Optical images of a particular segment of terrain (F1-F16) (or other reference date) are opto-mechanically selected in accordance with gross vehicle position; the selected segment image is coupled to a vidicon system including a vidicon (9) provided with a target area (8), deflection system (29) and raster (10); alternatively a flying spot scanner system is used which includes a flying spot scanner (42), a photo-detector (45) and lens system (43, 44). By controlling the deflection circuits of deflection system (29) and thus the geometry of the vidicon raster (10) or flying spot raster as a function of position and orientation of the vehicle as it moves, i.e. by electronically traversing the selected terrain image in duplication of the vehicle's motion (in accordance with the selected display stabilization mode) and photo-electrically sensing the image elements, a video representation of the vehicle's relative location and motion is obtained. This video is then displayed along with other desired data on a cathode ray tube such as TV display unit (17) or other display device such as moving map display (50).
