    • PURPOSE:To reduce consumption of lubricating oil in an internal combustion engine, by forming an angular projection at the top surface of each side rail used in a combined oil ring for the engine so that the side rails are held in line contact with the inner wall surface of a cylinder when they slide along the cylinder surface. CONSTITUTION:A steel oil ring, having side rails 2 disposed respectively at an upper and a lower pressure-acted surfaces of a space expander 5 with an upper and a lower projections 6 for pushing the side rails 2 outwards, is fitted in a ring groove 9 of a piston 8. The piston 8 is fitted in a cylinder 1 in the state that the oil ring is compressed.     • PURPOSE:To prevent turning of a side rail by a simple arrangement in which an L-shaped part formed at one end of a metal connecting wire connecting joint part of a space expander together is hooked into a slit formed at a joint part of said side rail. CONSTITUTION:Through-holes 6 are formed at a connecting part 11 near a joint part 10 of a space expander 1 of a composite steel oil ring, in the manner that they extend from the top to the bottom 8, and a metal connecting wire is extended through the through-holes 6. Further an L-shaped part 9 is formed at one end of the connecting wire 4 by way of bending. On the other hand, a slit 5 is formed in the inner surface of an upper side rail 2 or a lower side rail 3, and the L-shaped part 9 of the connecting wire 4 is hooked into the slit 5 so as to prevent the turning of the side rail.

    • PURPOSE:To aim at preventing abrasion of a combined oil ring and as well to stabilize oil consumption, by increasing the contact area between the inner peripheral surface of a side rail which is a part easily worn in the oil ring, and an expander, and as well by preventing the side rail from solely rotating. CONSTITUTION:An expander 3 and a side rail 4 for constituting a combined oil ring are disposed in an oil ring groove 2 in a piston 1. The widthwise direction of a strip member is directed in the slidable direction thereof, and the longitudinal direction thereof is rounded in its peripheral direction while being formed in a concave and convex shape, with both ends are abutted against each other, so that the expander 3 is built up. The spring force of an expander 3 is transmitted to the inner periphery of the side rail 4 through expander pawls 6 formed in the upper and lower ends of the expander 3 in its slidable direction. The expander pawls are formed of arcuate parts 6a continuous to the concave and convex parts of the expander 3, and flat parts 6b separated from the concave and convex parts and circumferentially continuous to the arcuate parts 6a. Further, the front ends of the flat parts 6b are bit into the inner periphery of the side rail 4.

    • A three-piece oil ring and a combination of the three-piece oil ring and a piston, those capable of realizing improved sealing property and reduction in lubrication oil consumption with avoiding generation of sticking even at low tension and thin width of the ring. The three-piece oil ring includes a spacer expander 10 and two side rails. The spacer expander has a radially inner end portion provided with seating tabs 13 protruding in an axial direction and having radially outer inclined surfaces for urging inner peripheral surfaces of the first and second side rails. The spacer expander has a radially outer end portion provided with side rail support portions 14 projecting in the axial direction for supporting axial end faces of the first and second side rails. A seating tab angle of the outer inclined surface relative to an axis is in a range of 10 to 20 degrees, and a ratio of 2X/Y is in a range of from 0.04 to 0.15 where 2X is a total projecting length of the side rail support portions in the axial direction, and Y is a distance between distal end faces of the seating tabs in the axial direction.

    • An improved thin 3-piece oil ring 1 of an axial width not greater than 2 mm, is provided that has a corrugated spacer expander 2 of a circumferentially successive, substantially U-shaped configuration, and circular, upper and lower side rails 3, 4 holding the spacer expander 2 therebetween. The spacer expander 2 has circumferentially spaced outer crowns 5 and circumferentially spaced inner crowns 6; each of the outer crowns 5 being connected with next adjacent ones of the inner crowns 6 on opposite sides thereof by a pair of connecting members 11. The spacer expander 2 has both of the most-end portions thereof extended radially outwardly from the most-end one of the inner crowns 6 thereof forming abutting members 15, 16 for abutting each other at the point of force P. The outer crowns 5 at the upper and lower ends thereof have protrusions beyond the axial width of the outer crowns 5 forming upper and lower, outer supporting members 7, 8 bearing against the lower and upper sides of the upper and lower side rails 3, 4, at the outer portion thereof, respectively. The inner crowns 6 at the upper and lower ends thereof have extensions beyond the axial width of the inner crowns 6 forming upper and lower, inner supporting members 9, 10 bearing against the inner edges of the upper and lower side rails 3, 4, respectively. Each connecting member (11) has a radially elongated oil slot 13 made therethrough, and each of the abutting members 15, 16 having a radially elongated guide bar slot (14) made therethrough. The spacer expander 2 has a guide bar 12 inserted through the guide bar slots 14 and a plurality of the oil slots 13, at least one portion of the guide bar 12 being fixed to the spacer expander 2 by caulking. In one aspect of the present invention, the guide bar slots 14 have the axial width thereof made equal to the outer diameter of the guide bar 12. In another aspect of the present invention, the abutting members 15, 16 are such that the point of force P is positioned radially outwardly apart from the inner circumferential surface of the spacer expander 2 by a distance not less than 40% and not more than 60% of the radial width of the spacer expander 2. In a further aspect of the present invention, both of the most-end portions of the abutting members 15, 16 that extend farther radially outwardly beyond the point of force P, are apart from each other making an angle of not less than 5 degrees therebetween. With the arrangement described above, an improved 3-piece oil ring is obtained that has a significantly improved oil-sealing characteristics when used with a piston of internal combustion engines.
