    • Transparent plates (1) face each other with a gap between the plates, the gap being charged with a plurality of fluids (2,3) having colors and relative densities different from each other. A fluid inlet/outlet device (4) through which fluid flows into or out from the gap is installed in order to hold an interface (5) of the fluids freely moving vertically. The fluid (2) above the interface (5) can be a gas and the fluid (3) below the interface (5) a liquid, or both the fluids above and below the interface may be liquids. The liquids may be transparent or opaque, colorless or colored. A spacer (6) is installed in the gap attached to the facing transparent plates (1) and the fluid inlet/outlet device (4) is formed by a cylinder (7) and a piston (8). It can be applied to windows and can permit complete transmission of sunlight or perform partial or complete shielding without using blinds or curtains to the window since it can freely raise or lower the interface (5) of the fluids (2,3) in the gap. In addition, it can be used as a shop front, an advertising display board or a sound insulating plate for use in window glass.

    • The present invention relates to a thermally-responsive film that may, for example, be affixed to an exterior surface of a building to help control its temperature as it is exposed to the sun. The thermally-responsive film has a continuous phase and a discontinuous phase. The discontinuous phase comprises a plurality of droplets, each of which comprises the light-absorbing suspending fluid and the light-reflecting particles. The light-reflecting particles are dispersed in a vehicle that is either a second fluid that is immiscible with the suspending fluid and has a higher volumetric coefficient of thermal expansion than the suspending fluid, or a combination of materials that together have a higher volumetric coefficient of thermal expansion than the suspending fluid that together with the light-reflecting particles form composite particles. At temperatures lower than a threshold temperature, the vehicle containing the light-reflecting particles has a higher density than the suspending fluid and sinks towards the rear surface of the film, so that incident light is absorbed. At temperatures higher than the threshold temperature, the vehicle containing the light-reflecting particles has a lower density than the suspending fluid and moves towards the front surface of the film, enabling the light-reflecting particles to reflect incident light.

    • The present invention provides a process for absorbing solar energy and, simultaneously having a continuous control of the light admission making it possible to install the device in external openings of buildings and equipment, such as windows, shutters or skylights. The system comprises two frames which support plates of transparent material, between which it is possible to introduce a colourful solution coming from an external reservoir. Both frames are interconnected through a flexible membrane which allows the plates to be pushed against each other, making the window transparent, or pushed away interposing the colourful solution, which will make the window uniform and gradually translucent or opaque. The said liquid comes from a reservoir and the access to the gap between the plates through is obtained by means of a channel that separates the two frames, allowing the liquid to flow evenly into the whole surface, thus being a homogenous and adjustable darkening obtainable. The inflow or outflow of the liquid between the plates is ruled by the vacuum level inside the reservoir containing the colourful solution. When the window is opaque or partially transparent, the solar energy heats the liquid which is then forced to flow by a circulating pump, passing through a heat exchanger which allows the energy absorption.

    • A double glass system is disclosed in which not only the sunbeams are completely shielded, but also the firefighting is made easier at a fire accident. An incombustible or combustion-resistant liquid with a pigment added therein is used as the solution to be supplied into the double glass. Thus the double glass can shield the sight and the sunbeams, and can serve as a compartment wall, while it is helpful to firefighting at a fire accident, because the solution generates a fire-suppressing gas upon being burned. Thus the functions of the double glass are diversified. Further, an opaque liquid such as mercury is used in place of the solution, so that a sunbeam-shielding effect, a sight blocking effect (to the required degree) and a mirror effect can be obtained. Mercury is supplied into double glass by expanding the mercury and the air by heating them, and therefore, a driving means such as pump is not required. Accordingly, the double glass system is simplified in its constitution, as well as allowing a low cost.
