摘要： Optically active 1,3 dioxolane derivatives containing a mesogenic residue, of the general formula (I), are suitable as doping agents especially in ferro-electrical liquid crystal mixtures. The meanings of the symbols in the general formula are: R1 is constructed similarly to the part of the general formula to the right of X or an alkyl or alkylene residue which may be substituted; R?2, R3, R4¿ = H or alkyl (R4 may also be alkenyl) which may also be substituted [R2, R3 together with the C(2) of the dioxolane ring may be a cycloaliphate or a keto group]; j, l, n = zero, 1 or 2 and k, m = zero or 1 provided that if k = zero, n = zero also, if n = zero, m = zero also and l « j + l + n « 3; -A?1, -A2, -A3¿ = aromatic, heterocyclic or aliphatic ring system; -M1,- M2 = -CO-O, -O-CO, -CH¿2?CH2, -CH=CH, -CH2O, -OCH2, -C=C and X = CH=CH, CH2-CH2. The special advantage of the compounds with the general formula (I) is that they can induce a high twisting capacity in a cholesteric phase without substantially affecting in the smectic C* phase the value of the spontaneous polarisation already in the mixture. They are therefore suitable for pitch compensation, especially for ferro-electrical liquid crystal mixtures.

摘要： The present invention relates to a high scattering smectic liquid crystal material and display device using the same. In the present invention, a series of smectic A phase liquid crystals having compact arrangement of crystal domains or a series of smectic liquid crystal mixed materials having a degree of order higher than that of the smectic A phase and an optical texture different from that of the smectic A phase are obtained by mixing a smectic liquid crystal with an organic compound having a high optical anisotropy (Δn) or mixing different types of smectic phases. When used in a smectic stable state liquid crystal display pattern, these materials have high scattering properties and can effectively improve the contrast of a smectic liquid crystal display device. The present invention also improves contrast when it used in a reflective smectic liquid crystal display device.

The derivative is a novel compound which exhibits the liquid crystal property by itself or can be used as an excellent dopant providing a high speed response to a composition comprising it even when the compound does not exhibit the liquid crystal property by itself. The derivative also exhibits a large spontaneous polarization.
