    • The present invention easily provides a polymer electrolyte that exhibits high proton conductivity under low humidity conditions and has a high level of durability and mechanical strength. The polymer electrolyte is produced by mixing proton-conducting sulfonated polyethersulfone C1, sulfonated polyphenylene sulfide C2 or sulfonated poly(4-phenoxybenzoyl-1,4-phenylene) C3 having a sulfonic acid group A as a protic acid group with 1,4-benzenedimethanol B as a crosslinking agent having a methylol group and heat-treating the mixture so that a reaction can be carried out. The polymer electrolyte includes a plurality of proton-conducting sulfonated polyethersulfone moieties C chemically bonded at their aromatic ring moieties other than the sulfonic acid group A to one another through a residue B′ of 1,4-benzenedimethanol.

    • Disclosed herein are a process for the preparation of a carboxylated arylene thioether oligomer, in which an alkali metal sulfide is caused to act on a poly(arylene thioether) so as to depolymerize the poly(arylene thioether), thereby preparing an alkali thiolate-containing oligomer, and a carboxylating agent is then caused to act on the alkali thiolate-containing oligomer, thereby forming the carboxylated arylene thioether oligomer, and a process for the production of an arylene thioether copolymer, wherein the carboxylated arylene thioether oligomer alone, which has been obtained in accordance with this preparation process, or a mixture of the carboxylated oligomer in an amount of at least 50 wt. % and another carboxylic compound in an amount less than 50 wt. % is reacted with an alkylenediol or an alkylenediol and a polyester or an alkylene diol and a lactone.

    • A stabilized polyphenylene sulfide is provided which comprises a recurring unit ##STR1## wherein the average n between foreign units is greater than about 5, and about 0.05 to about 10 mole % per phenylene sulfide unit of an aromatic constituent chemically bonded with said polyphenylene sulfide chain, said aromatic constituent containing an electron attractive group selected from the group consisting of --SO.sub.2 --, --CO--, --NO.sub.2, --SO.sub.3 R, --COOR, wherein R is H, lower aliphatic hydrocarbon groups, aromatic hydrocarbon groups or alkaline metals, and --CONH--, and said stabilized polyphenylene sulfide has a melting point in the range of about 250.degree. Also provided is a method for preparing stabilized polyphenylene sulfide comprising preparing a polyphenylene sulfide consisting mainly of a recurring unit ##STR2## wherein the degree of polymerization of said recurring unit is greater than about 20, and reacting said polyphenylene sulfide with about 0.05 to about 20 mole % per said phenylene sulfide unit of a halogenated aromatic compound having an electron attractive group.
