    • A wire guide includes a mandrel that has a proximal portion and a distal portion. A first coating with a low coefficient of friction is disposed on the proximal portion of the mandrel. A second coating is disposed on the distal portion of the mandrel, where the second coating provides a sub-structure. A third coating is disposed on the second coating, where the third coating comprises a surface that allows for easy maneuverability of the wire guide. The first coating on the proximal portion provides enough lubricity to keep the wire guide from becoming bound or stuck in a catheter or medical device while still allowing a user to have a good grip of the wire guide. The second coating on the distal portion provides lubricity for the wire guide, which allows the user to easily maneuver the wire guide through a vascular anatomy.

    • A medical device (10) including a tube (11) having a highly uniform and repeatable inner and outer diameter, the tube (11) possessing good trackability, pushability and torquability, and the tube (11) being highly resistant to collapse, necking or kinking during use. The tube (11) first includes a metal coil (14) in a stressed, radially expanded condition, the metal coil (14) preferably being formed as a flat wire. The polymeric layer (18) is preferably heat-shrinkable shrinkable tubing made of one or more of nylon or polyurethane. The tube (11) optionally includes an inner liner (20) beneath and in contact with at least part of the coil (14), the liner (20) preferably being composed of PTFE. The polymeric layer (18) maintains the coil (14) in its stressed, radially expanded condition, for example, by adhesion to the coil (14) (such as by thermal bonding to it).

    • A medical device (10) includes at least a stylet (12) for establishing the location of tissue of interest, such as a nonpalpable lesion in breast tissue. The device may also include a needle assembly (14) and an aspiration syringe (16). The medical device (10) can most readily be understood as an improvement in Kopans-type or hookwire-type localizer stylet having a wire shaft (18) with a distal end (28), and a hook (36) depending in a proximal direction from the wire shaft (18). The improvements entail spacing the hook (36) proximally of the distal end (28) of the wire shaft (18), and providing the wire shaft with a twist between the hook (36) and the distal end (28) of the wire shaft (18). Wire shaft (18) has first and second wire segments (20 and 30), each including a respective distal twisted portion (24 or 34) adjacent its respective distal end (22 or 32). The first wire segment (20) further includes a generally straight portion (26) extending proximally of its distal twisted portion (24), while the second wire segment (30) further includes a hook (36) extending proximally of its distal twisted portion (34).

    • A radially expandable stent (10) made from a cannula or sheet of biocompatible material that includes at least one longitudinal segment (14) comprised of a series of laterally interconnected closed cells (13). Each closed cell of a longitudinal segment is defined laterally by a pair of longitudinal struts (15, 16) that are interconnected at each end by a circumferentially adjustable member (19, 20). When the stent is expanded using a balloon (47), the opposing circumferentially adjustable members deform to allow circumferential expansion of the longitudinal segment, while the length of the segment, as defined by the longitudinal struts, is maintained. Self-expanding versions of the stent utilize a nickel-titanium alloy. Adjacent longitudinal segments are joined by flexible interconnection segments (21) that permit the stent to bend laterally. The flexible interconnection segment is comprised of curvilinear struts (22, 23) that form a series of serpentine bends (81) that distribute lateral bending forces. In a preferred embodiment, a short strut interconnects longitudinal segments and an adjacent interconnection segment. Each interconnection strut attaches to the longitudinal segment within a region (27) at the end (17) of a longitudinal strut (15) dividing two adjacent closed cells.
