    • Disclosed herein are a method for batchwisely calcining and activating infusibilized spherical pitch beads in an upper stage and a lower stage fluidized beds formed on respective perforated plates, by calcining the pitch beads in the upper stage at 600-800.degree. C. with a heated exhaust gas from a space for the lower stage, discharging activated carbon beads of the previous batch from the space for the lower stage, stopping the fluidization of the upper stage by guiding the exhaust gas from the space for the lower stage to the space for the upper stage through a bypass line so that the calcined beads can fall down to the space for the lower stage through the holes of the perforated plate of the upper stage, and activating the falling calcined beads at 800-1200.degree. C. while forming the lower stage fluidized bed with a heated calcining and activating gas, and a furnace used for the above method.

    • An apparatus for driving a liquid jet head comprises: a piezoelectric element which mechanically deforms responsive to an electric signal; a pressure chamber whose volume varies due to the deformation of such element; a discharge port communicated with such chamber; 1st and 2nd charging circuits to charge such element at the same polarity; a discharging circuit to discharge such element; and a control unit for making the 1st charging circuit operative prior to the operation of the 2nd charging circuit. A charge time constant of the 1st charging circuit is set to be sufficiently long that no droplet is emitted. A charge time constant of the 2nd charging circuit is set to be shorter to emit a droplet from the discharge port. The surface tension of the meniscus and the contractive force due to the contraction of the pressure chamber act multiplicatively, so that it is possible to record a droplet of a small dot diameter.

    • The invention is related to a safety device for a press machine or the like. The safety device includes a first guard plate which slidably extends over the machine access area and is powered by an air cylinder having a movable rod connected to a movable arm of the first guard plate. The device also has a second guard plate slidably attached to the first guard plate which has a switch means for deactivating the air cylinder and therefore stopping the forward motion of the first guard plate whenever the second guard plate exhibits movement toward said first guard plate. For example, when a user's hand is in the access area and the second guard plate strikes the hand thereby slidably moving the second guard plate toward the first, the safety device is deactivated and the guard plates move away from the machine access area.
