    • An evaporative fuel-purging control system for an internal combustion engine having a canister in which evaporative fuel from a fuel tank is adsorbed. One or more purging control valves are arranged across a purging pipe extending between the canister and an intake system. An ECU integrates an estimated value of a flow rate of evaporative fuel supplied to the engine, which is estimated as a purging flow rate in the purging pipe, in accordance with engine operating conditions when a specific one of the purging control valves is opened to thereby obtain an integrated purging flow rate value, and subtracts a predetermined decremental value from the integrated purging flow rate value when the specific one purging control valve is closed. When the integrated purging flow rate value is equal to or smaller than a predetermined lower limit value, the ECU decreases the flow rate of the evaporative fuel supplied to the intake system, based on the integrated purging flow rate value obtained above. When an air-fuel ratio correction coefficient value is equal to or greater than a predetermined value and at the same time the integrated purging flow rate value is equal to or greater than a predetermined value, the ECU increases the flow rate, based upon the integrated purging flow rate value.

    • A method of determining the activation of an exhaust gas ingredient-concentration sensor for use in an internal combustion engine. The air-fuel ratio of a mixture is controlled in a feedback manner by the use of a coefficient varying with an output of the sensor during engine operation in an air-fuel ratio feedback control region. The activation of the sensor is determined based on the output of the sensor. When the engine has shifted from the air-fuel ratio feedback control region to a predetermined decelerating region, calculated is an average value of values of the coefficient obtained by the feedback control immediately before the shifting. The air-fuel ratio of the mixture is leaned by the use of the average value thus calculated. It is determined whether or not the sensor is activated when the air-fuel ratio has thus been leaned.

    • An evaporative fuel-processing system for an internal combustion engine has an evaporative emission control system and a pressure sensor. An ECU carries out negative pressurization of the interior of the evaporative emission control system, by opening a purge control valve and closing a vent shut valve. The purge control valve is closed over a predetermined time period after the interior of the evaporative emission control system is brought into the predetermined negatively pressurized state, and a rate of decrease in negative pressure within the evaporative emission control system is detected. Then, it is determined whether or not there is leakage from the evaporative emission control system, based on the detected rate of decrease in the negative pressure, and at least one detected pressure value at at least one predetermined time point within the predetermined time period over which the purge control valve is closed.

    • A fuel injection amount control system for an internal combustion engine includes an ECU which calculates a desired amount of fuel to be supplied to each combustion chamber in response to operating conditions of the engine, and calculates values of parameters indicative of fuel adherence characteristics of the interior of the intake passage in response to operating conditions of the engine. The ECU further calculates a first fuel amount which is directly drawn into the combustion chamber from a fuel amount injected by the fuel injection valve, and a second amount of fuel which is carried off the wall surface of the intake passage due to evaporation and drawn into the combustion chamber, based upon the values of the parameters. The ECU calculates an injection amount of fuel to be injected, by correcting the desired fuel amount, based upon the first and second fuel amounts. When the engine is in a predetermined operating condition in which convergence of the fuel injection amount calculated by the ECU to the desired fuel amount can be unstable, the value of at least one of the parameters such that the fuel injection amount stably converges to the desired fuel amount.
